one measure. He undoubtedly agrees with them on all others. The Whigs should not therefore withdraw their countenance from his Adminis

tration. Let them give their hearty support and co-operation. He will not ask at their Hands a re-election; but we doubt not he will lend his aid and influence to elect a President that shall be essentially and strictly a Whig. Keep cool, calm, and steady then. Great good can yet be accomplished; and when the proper time arrives, a National Bank, more beneficial and more acceptable than the one provided for by the vetoed bill, will be furnished the country.

THE VETO POWER How we dislike the word veto, the

of one man. It is a prerogative of despots that should not be permitted to grow in our democratic soil. In a Republican Government one man should not have the power to put at defiance the will of the majority. BRUTAL MURDER. An Irishman, whose name we cannot learn, was found last Wednesday or Thursday morn

ing, in the south-east part of town, most shockindv mangled and bruised. One of his arms

was broken in two places, and his body, head r,,1 fan mnst. hmtallv beat and bruised. He was

a Ho was rnhliffl of $100. We have not

s tU heard that our town authorities have taken any

steDS to discover the perpetrators of this glaring

crime. Such a circumstance should not go un

.noticed.- The guilty should be sought out and brought to punishment. The Common Council

should immediately offer a reward, or take such other course' as they in their wisdom might deem

efficient. The whole matter is now shrouded in

mystery, that might be penetrated if prompt

steps were taken.

"You have doubtless ere this seen the veto

ing less than two-thirds the biiyof course ieil. I feel however pretty confident that we shall yet

have, a Bank, that the Land Bill will pass, and that the session will close triumphantly."

Some of the Locos are already pointing to the Madisonian, as a Whig paper that supports and

justifies the President in his veto. The Madiso

nian is not a Whiff paper. It was established as

a Van Buren paper. It afterwards became Conservative; and supported Gen. Harrison for President. Since his death, however, it has broached and advocated doctrines antagonistical to the principles of the Whigs, and for which they will not be responsible. For our part we never did consider it a strict Whig paper; and now we look upon it as being little better, if any, in its principles, than the Globe.
