'"What is uow to be regarded ns the judgment of

me American people on this subject, 1 have no accurate means of determining, but by appeolinn; to their more immediate representatives. The late contest, which terminated in the election of General Harrison to the Presidency, was decided in principles well known and openly declared; and, while the Sub-Treasury received in the result the most decided condemnation, yet no other scheme of finance seemed to have been concurred in. To you, then, who have come more directly from the bosom of our common constituents, I submit the entire question, as best quali-

ficd to give a full exposition of their: wishes and opinions. I shall be ready to concur with you in the adoption of such system as you may propose, reserving to myself the ultimate power of rejecting any measure which may in my view of it conflict with the Constitul ion or otherwise jeopard the prosperity of the country; a power which I could not part with even if I would, but which I will not believe any act of yours will call into requisition."

From, the Fort Wayne Sentinel. At the moment of going to press this morning, by the politeness of a traveller we were favored with a slip from the office of the Cleveland Advertiser, containing the following horrid catastrophe.

From the .Cleveland Advertiser Extra Aug, llth, r ti o'clock A. M. Awiul Calamity. THE STEAM BOAT ERIE BURNT. ISO LIVES ."LOST. ! By the SteumbonfJDuni. Perry, just arrived from Buffalo, we are stirUeH with the appalling intelli

gence that the Steamboat Erie was entirely destroyed by fire on the afternoon of Monday last. So far as we can learn from the floating rumors brought by the Perry, the Erie started from Buffalo with over two hu.ndked passengers only TWENTYNINE of whom escaped.

ihe conflagration took place oft tilvpr Creek, nbout twenty-five miles this side of Buffalo. It is somewhat co-incident that the Steamboat Washington wns burned two years ago, near the same spot. Thp fire wns discovered by the De Wiit Clinton, then about 18 miles west of the Erie... She was immediately put for the spot and arrived in time to rescue twenty-seven of the survivors. Two others were picked up by a small boat from Dunkirk, and these comprise tire whole list of saved. The Clinton towed the wreck to within three miles

of the shore, when the line parted, and it sunk.

When the uiinton reached the spot, the trie was

burned to the water's edge, the few survivors cling

in2 to the naming fragments ot the wreck, or

floatingon such stary article, as accident furnished.

The fire appeared to originate from the bursting of

a demijohn of spirits of turpentine, of which, 2 or 3

were placed by some painters who had been at work

on board, near the fluez.

A more disastrous spectacle could not have bppn presented. Perishing hundreds awaited a frarful death for what fate is more dreadful than such as is

met in the midst of burning timbers and sliding

smoke: alone in their misery on the waters; with

the land, which they would have bartered worlds to

gain, but five or six miles away; with none to hea the wild cry for succor or to sppak consolation to th

despairing spirit, rearttil most tearful was their perilous condition, and. it. will belting before either the

event or its consequences are forgotten.

From the Madisonian of August 12. SUB-TREASURY REPEALED. The amendments adopted by the House to the bill repealing the Sub-Treasury were yesterday concurred in by the Senate, and the bill therefore only wants the signature of the President to become a law. The bill repeals the Sub-Treasury act excepting that part of it which provides for the punishment of defaulters; it repeals also the Deposit act of 1836 (the Stale Bank Deposit system) excepting the 13th and 14th sections, and also repeuls a law of 1S36 limiting the receivability ef bank notes to those of a denomination above ,$20. The Senate employed the residue of the day in discussing and amending the Land Bill.

Ihe Bankrupt Law occupied the deliberations of

the House. If the Repeal Bill becomes a law, and the Bank Bill does not, the Treasury will be thrown upon the law ..of 17S9. , : COMMUNICATED. OBITUARY. :, Departed this life near Rome, Perry county, India

Consumption and its fatal consrauences.

It is made known to us from the "bills of mortality," that two thirds of the human family die annually from that fatal de stroycr "Consumption!" Would patients pay more regard to their health, and procure proper remedies nt the first attack, many valuable lives wou'd be saved to the enjoyment of their dear est friends and relatives. It is a well known fact that "Doctor SwaYne's CoMi'orNb Syrcp of Wild Cherry" will arrest the dangerous disease, This Medicine has proved its efficacy in "thousands of cases." The very many certificates received, and the recommendations from country agentB, who sell this Medicine throughout the United States, is truly astonishing they speak

from ocular prool, witnessing the cures in their own vicinity

This certainly is sufficient evidence to convince the most skeptl

col of the wonderful efficacy of this invaluable medicine. Will

patients any longer be duped by inexperienced compounds, rec

ommended by ignornnt pretenders as "cure alls," which they

well known is both ruinous to the health and constitution ?

PRINCIPAL DEPOT for the above medicine is at No 19

North EIGHTH St , Philadelphia. It may he obtained of agents
