ut it is obvious that the public sentiment in Maine

demands a change in the office. It is unnecessary to specify the evidences furnished of this slate of public

reeling, you are aware ot the popular expressions at the meeting above referred to, and of the statements and request set forth in the memorials of citizens, and the recommendations of many individuals who enjoy the confidence of the people, and from the situations they occupy, are entitled to speak in a representative capacity. They ar6 such as to warrant the conclusion that your longer continuance in office WILL EXCITE THE rUBI.lC DISAPPROBATION. I have "accordingly "come to t!ie"3etermi;iation of ordering a new appointment of Foslmaster for the city of Portland. Thomas Todd, Esq. will be appointed your successor. In order to allow sufficient time and a convenient period for bringing the business of your office to a close, General Todd will not be required to take charge of the office until the commencement of the ensuing quarter, which will be on the 1st January, on which day this appointment will go into effect. I am respectfully, your obedient servant, V. T. BARRY. . Is it not conclusive, Mr. Editor, that the policy of the preceding Administration was to remove, in all ' cases, incumbents from, office . who were opposed in opinion to the measures of the Administration, and substitute in their state, political partizans, who were willing and able to contribute aid in behalf of a per- j

petuation of their political power the above letter is offered as record evidence of the fact. Mr. Mitchell was removed for no official misconduct; on the contrary, the Postmaster General frankly attests that his ''official conduct had met with my (his) decided approhation;" and appears to have consented to his dismissal with manifest reluctance. It establishes, however, an important fact, that the Administration held themselves obliged to remove whenever "the public sentiment demands a change" that is, whenever "the Party" required the dismissal of a public officer from whom no political support .fould be extracted, and the substitution in his place of some one vh: could and would applv that assistance. Does this not draw us

irresistibly to the conclusion, that the present Loco

Foco incumbents were corruptly advanced to power and place upon that principle and if so, is it not due

tothedigmty ot the nation, and in. accordance with every principle of justice, that they be immediately dismissed. Having been found in office upon the coming into power of the existing Administration, is proof that they were either preferred to supply the

places made vacant liy the dismissal ot stern and m

corruptible Republicans, or having been appointed by former Administrations, they basely yielded under

the influence of retention in office. Under this gre-

vious wrong have we been living for the last twelve years, and until the late glorious victory, when the People placed power in the hands of their Servants to apply the remedy. Why, sir, is it not done? why is

their will thus utterly disregarded! CrtEAtv.

MR. BRENT AND MR. CLAY. An unfortunate

difference had occurred between these gentlemen,

which has led Mr. Brent to charge Mr. Olay with in

gratitude and a want 'of integrity of purpose, in his conduct towards his friends. He has also cited some

expressions made use of by Gen. Harrison, to show

that he also had received treatment at. the hands of

Mr. Clay, which caused him to entertain the same

opinion of him. This lias induced the publication of

. the following remarks made by (jcn. Harrison shortly

before his inauguration, tit. a public dinner at George town, which are vouched for by Mr. C. C. Fulton: The Hon. Henry Clay having been toasted, Gen

Harrison rose and remarked in words and substance

as follows: "I take great pleasure in responding to the senti merit which has just been received with so much en

thusiasm by the company, for I am proud to be able to state that the distinguished individual alluded to is my firm personal and political friend. My own inclination, as well as a duly which I owed to the coun

try, prompted me to tender to him the hrst post in my

Cabinet; but in his own good judgment, and no earth ly man was blessed with a better judgment, he had de

clined it, and I felt willing to yield to bis wishes, both from the knowledge that my Administration would

receive cordial support from him as a Senator of the

United States, and from the experience which had taught me that Henrv Clay was always right, let him

differ with whom he may. I consider his judgment

superior to that of any man living; for, dunns my po litical life I have never differed with him on any im

portant subject that I did not afterwards become con

vinced that he was right and I was wrong. .

We nave seen it stated in one of the western pa

pers, that Joe Smith, the Mormon, once paid a visit to Keokuck, the Indian chief, and attempted to persuade him to embrace the Mormon creed. He told the Indian that Mormonism would prevent the bullets from injuring him, and that he had himself been shot three times, and not hurt. Keokuck then requested Joe to stand sixty paces off, at which distance he would shoot at him three times with his rifle, and if he remained unharmed, the Indian, promised to embrace Mormonism. This was raiher too much fur Joe, and he accordingly backed out, and refused to take him on "those conditions." Hartford Times.

Consumption and its fatal coiisiujnciicrs. It is made known to us from the "bills of mortality," that two thirds of the human family die annually from that fatal de stroyer "Consumption!" Would patients pay more regard to their health, and procure proper remedies at the first attack, many valuable lives would he saved to the enjoyment of their dear est friends and relatives. It is a well known fact that "Doctor Swayne's Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry" will arrest the dangerous disease. This Medicine has proved its efficacy in "t housands of cases." The very many certificates received, and the recommendations from country agents, who sell this Medicine throughout the United Slates, is truly astonishing they speak from ocular proof, witnessing the cures in their own vicinity. This certainly is sufficient evidence to convince the most skeptical of the wonderful efficacy of this invaluable medicine. Will 'patients any longer be duped by inexperienced compounds, recommended by ignorant pretenders as "cure alls," which they

well known is both ruinous to the health and constitution?

PRINCIPAL DEPOT for the above medicine is at No. 19

North EIGHTH St , Philadelphia. It may be obtained of agents

generally throughout the United Stntes. Trice $1 per bottle. N. B. Any person wishing to see certificates of cures and re commendations, can see them at any time by calling at the Prin cipal Depot. For sale by
