will be received at this offiee until 3 o'clock, P. M. ol the 20ih July next, lor furnishing and delivering, free
ol all cost and charge to the United Mates
3,000 barrels of Navy Beef, and 3,600 bands of Navy
Pork: each barrel to contain two hundred pounds
nett weight, of Boef or Pork. To. be delivered as fol
lows, viz : .

All the said Beef and Pork to bo delivered between the 5th day of April and the 15th day of June, 1842;
unless earlier deliveries sliould be authorized by the
Navv Commissioners.
The Beef must be packed from well fattened cattle, weighing not les than five hundred pounds nett weight each. The legs and leg rands of the hind quarters, and the shins and shoulder clods, and at least eight
pounds from the neck end of each lore-quarter, or the r . . i n " , i. .. j.i:
parts marked jos. 1, and j on me uruwuig or ueuneation of the fore and hind quarters of an Ox, which will be attached to and form a part of the contract,
must be wholly excluded from each barrel, and the re
mainder ot the carcass must be cut in pieces oi not
less than eiirht nounds each.
The pork must be packed from corn-fed, well fatten
ed hogs, weighing not less than two nunureu pounds each, excluding the heads, joles, necks, shoulders, hams, legs, feet and lard, and all refuse pieces; and must be cut in pieces weighing not less than six pounds each. Both the Beef and Pork must bo slaughtered between the first of November next and the periods of delivery, and must be sailed with at least one bushel of coarse
Turk's Island, Isle of May, or St. Ubes salt, and with five ounces of pure pulverized saltpetre, to each bar

as strong as salt can make it.
The barrels to be made of the best seasoned white
oak or white ash staves and heading. If of the former, to be not less than three fourths of an inch thick; if of the latter, to be not less than one inch thick, and to be hooped at least three fourths over with the best
white oak or hickory hoops, except the crose hoop, which must be of iron, at least one inch wide, and not less than the denomination No . 17. All at the expense
or the respective contractors.
Each barrel must be branded on its Head, "iavy
Beef," or Navy Pork, as the case may be, with the contractors name, and the year when packed.
The Beef and Pork will be inspected by the inspect
ing officers at the respective Navy Yards aforesaid,
and by some "sworn inspectors of salt provisions,"
who will be selected by the respective L-ommanaing
Officers; but their charges for such inspection must be
paid by the respective contractors, who must likewise
have the barrels in good shipping otder, to tne satisfaction of the commandants of the respective Navy
Yards aforesaid, after the inspections,'and at theirown expense. .
Bidders must snecitv their prices separately ano dis
tinctly, in separate offers for the Beef and for the Pork,
and lor each ol the places ot delivery, covering an ex oenses and all charges.

lief of the writer that the person offering to contract
is practically acquainted by experience, wun tne Deet

the ability to perform his contract in a satisfactory
manner, and that his sureties have also the ability, in
case of failure on tha part of the contractor, to pay the
the amount ot their bonds.
The Board of Navy Commissioners reserve to them-
elves the right to reject all offers from persons who
ave heretofore tailed to lulhl their contracts, or who
o not forward satisfactory letters, showing their abil-
ty, and the ability of their securities, to complete the
contracts.
Bonds in one-third the amount of the respective con
tracts will be required; and ten per centum, in addition, will be withheld from the amount of each pay
ment to be made, as collateral security for the due and faithful performance of their respective contracts;
which will, on no account, be paid until the contracts are complied with in all respects, and
s to be forfeited to the U3e and benefit of the United
States, in the event of failures to complete the deliveries within the prescribed periods. And in case of failure on the part of the contractors to deliver the aferesaid beef and pork within tho time specified, the Navy Commissioners to have the right to direct purchases to be made to supply the deficiencies, and any excess of cost to be charged to and paid by the contractors. Payment will be made by the United States (excepting the ten per centum to be withheld until the completion of the contracts as before Stated) within thirty days after the said beef and pork shall have been inspected and received, and bills for the same shall be presented to the Navy Agents respectively, duly approved by the Commandants of the respective Navy Yards according to the terms of the contracts, The parts of the beef to be excluded from the barrel
