In lsi'2 on the above date General lleauregard took command of the army of Mississippi. Jeneral William Sherman assumed command of the army in WJ. It was in lsTl that the crusade of women against the liquor tratlic were mobbed in Columbus Ohio. Tin: Foss-1 Joyce congressional light in the seventh district in Chicago resulted in Toss' nomination by acclamation. h the Indiana democracy has anything to say about the next presidential nonination, it will mention an Indiana man (!ov. Matthews. It is truly refreshing to hear Urooke, of the Kepublican, acknowledge his weaknesses. The rank and tile of the Kepubliban party have realized it for some time. Wr. perceive a great manydemocratic papers are inclined to laugh at the predicament the republican party is in over the silver question, predicting a jplit in its ranks. The condition of the political weather is of such a nature that the democratic party is in the same oeculiar fix. Tin: only way that Kddie Urooke can answer an argument is by referring to the color of our hair. It seems to depress him greatly, owing, we suppose, tu the illuminous rays that branch out from this capillary vegetation. We would inform Kddie that it covers some tiling more than hay seed. Tin-: Inter Ocean says editorially that the presidential campaign will not be fought on monetary lines. The American people, it says, "demand a return to the principles of protection." While there is no doubt that the tariff will cut considerable figure, it is another absolute fact, that if the old parties neglect and completely ignore the people in their demand for money legislation, they will receive a stinging rebuke at the hands of the American people. UNRELIABLE NEWS. "People Who in ;i;ti House Should Not Throw stones." The above quotation would apply forcibly to the would-be sagacious editor of the Kepublican, if he would descend from his imaginary lofty perch and atliliate with mortal man for a brief period of time. Last week he attempted to annihilate Tin: Indkpi-:niknt by sarcastically asking when reliable news would be furnished through its columns. Vet in the same issue he proceeds to give out a statement that had been proven by Tiik Indfi-kmifnt to be without foundation. Two weeks ago the Democrat of this city published an article referring to the supposed murder of Johnnie Sweet by his father, now deceased. Tin: Iniiktknimat sent a reporter to the place where the widow resided and learned that the story was without the slightest foundation, and so reported it. Hut this wise editoral quill driver had amission to perform. Jie had an axe to grind. He came out last week with a reproduction of the article as it appeared in the Democrat and proceeded to rake up all the cussedness lie could discover against the dead man, and standing as it were, over the cold and lifeless clay, malignantly condemned him for cruelties practiced upon his children before death pilsicd his hand and sealed his lips. Not satisfied with the fact that old man Sweet had passed in to the mysteries of the great beyond, and had his hearing before an impartial

that "the wretch (Sweet) would receive his reward." Such inhumanity and inconsistency is truly remarkable. To again show the unreliability of his assertions, he says "he carefully investigated the matter " If Urooke had put out a little money and sent a representative of his paper to the unfortunate widow, as Tin: Ixdkpf.ndkxt did, he would have been able to have given his readers "ki:i.iai:i.i:"' news. lint the facts appeareii in TiiK IsDF.rr.NDF.NT. To cast a questionable roilection on this paper, the editor of the Kepublican preferred to tako the chances of public comment, and help to further spread the false accusation against one who was silenced by death, and unable to defend his character against such an ungracious and ungentlemanly attack. While there is no doubt that the reports regarding the cruelty of the deceased to his children were true, he is in the hands of One whose authority is somewhat higher than the editor of the Kepublican. The only reason why we have made this public matter, is owing to Iiis unwarranted attack upon Tiik Indli'Kndünt for publishing a wrong i statement in a little personal notice. and to further show to unbiased people which paper gives "unreliable news." MARRIED EIGHTY YEARS. Tht Kr niaiklle Ketord of m t'otiplw In the West. The following was handed in bv J C. Howell. The couple referred to are old acquantances of Mr. Uowell's mother, so that the truthfulness of the following is without doubt: The oldest living couple in the United States beyond a doubt has for the past 42 years resides within three miles of Ulack Kiver I'alls, Wis., says the Chicago Chronicle. Louis and Amelia Darwin were born in the province of Onterio not far from Montreal. The husband was born on September 21, 17N or one year before the inaugration of the first president of the I'nited States The wife was born at La I'ero's Isle on March IT, IT'.M, and is now past her 101st year. The aged people are descendants from a race which for many generations was noted for remarkable longevity. Kighty years have passed since they were joined in wedlock and a family of 12 children was the fruit of their marriage. Five are still living in this vicinity ranging from T to 04 years. The oldest child, were it living to-day would be 7'J years old. For .U years (Irandma Darwin was totally blind. Strange and incredible as it may seem, in her fJth year she recovered her second sight anil was able to distinguish her children. Vet during the period of her blindness she performed her household duties wiihout any assistance. The old gentleman has been a re markable man. When he was lifc) years old he could dance a jig equal to a dancing master, but the past four years he has gradually wasted away, until today he is but a shadow of Ids former self. I he lUn Moililieil. The Keview, a Catholic newspaper of Chicago, publishes an important decree of the Jioman propaganda given in Kome under date of .Jan. IS, 1st;, which mo lifies the decrees in condemnation of the societies of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias,-and sons of Temperance. Catholics who had belonged to those societies before the publication of the condemnation decree are now allowed to leave their names upon the roll of those societies and to pay into the treasury dues and assessments whereever pecuniary loss and detriment would follow from complete severance of t'.'S. The general prohibition still remains as to any other participation in the proceedings of the societies.--Valparaiso Messenger. Cent liar Case of AI ! ( ripe. MissCripe, daughter of John ('ripe, about twenty years of age, and who lives near the city, has an affliction which may or may not be peculiar, at all events, a diagnosis of the case does not furnish a satisfactory verdict or one on which the result may be predicated. The lady a year or more ago, while visiting in the west, drank of water that as she relates was roily and she thinks she swallowed an animal, at all events there is an apparent living foreign animal that distresses her, moving and jerking now here, now there, in all respects as would a bactrachia. Anyway the case is a peculiar one. Dr. Ihrig has the management and is quite at his wits' end to proscribe. (loshen News. A popular young gentleman of this city received a leap-year proposal some time ago from a young lady in Ohio, which is very neat and something new. The proposal is written on a piece of notepaper and nicely decorated with baby riboon. We spoke a few weeks ago regarding the speed that could be attained by the hotter owned by Frank Lamson, and we can reidily acknowledge it, by a costly experience, that she makes a mile in short enough time to suit the most fastidious. We have, ever since that memorable runaway in which our friend Lamson figured so conspicuously, had a kind of sneaking suspicion that he had it in for us, and when he telephoned Thursday and desired our company in a short drive, we were thoroughly convinced that we were to be sacrificed on the rack for revenge. Jiut even believing it, we could not resist the temptation of riding behind his stepper. After being seated in the buggy and lighting one of Frank's "two-fors," we started north past the fair grounds. That ride will go down in history as a great one, and barring a few bumps raised on our lace by the (lying gravel which that mare had a faculty of turning up, we are as good as ever.
