ARE THEY ALL RIGHT?

Till i the Ouffttion Afced by the Columbia C ity Iot of a Wholesale Ciroeery. Last Friday, the agents for the Herr & lferley wholesale grocery firm, of Daton, were in Columbia City delivering a car load of groceries. The Tost informed its readers that the grocery firms of that place thought there was something wrong when a firm can send out agents to canvass a Jcjunty and then deliver as good a quality of goods as the samples they sell from. The Tost in commenting upon the subject pertinently remarks: Whether it is true or not we are unable to say, and we might also add, that the farmer who read the Columbia City papers, are not kept very well posted as to the price of groceries through tho advertisements they lind in the weeklies. If you can sell them sugar, rice, beans, etc., as cheap as some wholesale firm can do it, why don't you let them know by advertising?" Ill an interview With those who deliver the groceries at that place a iew things were learned. They said that this was their fourth delivery, and the largest, the latter amountingtoa little over SUM. They also informed the reporter that during their last canvass they had taken orders from UYA different parties, and all orders were called for at the car. This firm is having several states worked in this manner, and in many places their deliveries amount to from tf'J.UDO to $3,000. Four men work a country at a time and go from house to house in the county and take orders from samples carried, thesame as traveling men who do business with the retailer. To give our grocery firms an insight into their mode of doing business, we reproduce a card which each canvasser carries, and tells the story: Ol'K TKKMS. 1 No goods paid for until delivered. 2. We do uot ask our customers to sin a note an order or a iajer of any kind whatever. 3. Kvery dollar's worth of goods sold to leas ood as samples shown by our salesmen. 4. Any broken package or waste of goods in khipplug Is our loxs. .1. tioods are shipped in full car lots, and you come and get your goods from the car on day of delivery. a. You p-iy your own freight on tho goods you luiy . 7. We send yon notice about ten das previous to the day our goods arrive. These agents do the same business in this locality, and it does seem to us that our merchants can sell as the wholesaler. There is certainly a bad feature in this kind of business. While it may be honest and legitimate, yet it is very destructive to the grocery stores and the only thing left for our grocers to do, so long as these gentlemen continue to do a square business, is to let the people know that they can sell good goods as cheap as any one who has to hire livery rigs and canvass a county for two weeks, and also try to convince the farmers that it is the cheapest trade where they can exchange butter and eggs for sugar, coffee etc. IIl-k' VVeutlier. Prophet Hicks say a snow storm will run from 2nd to 5th, followed by a cold wave about the 7th, more reactionary storms of rain, turning to snow, will occur about 8th to Uth. Another cold wave will come in about the Uth and 12th. A regular storm period runs from about 12th to 17th. A reactionary storm disturbance falls from 10th to 22nd, with a mercury period central on the 22. Look for heavy storms of rain, thunder, sleet and snow from about lUth to 23rd. A general cold wave behind these storms, the effects of which will be felt in all parts of the country. The last storm period of the month under intluence of Earth, Mercury, Vulcan and Moon at full on the equator and at perigee, begins on 21th and runs to the end of the month. A partial eclipse of the moon will be seen in parts of the globe on that date. Another New Knterprl. An eastern firm of unquestionable responsibility is desirous of contracting several hundred acres of cucumber pickles to be grown within five or six miles of Plymouth. Could they be assured of sufficient contracts to warrant them in so doing, at prices as favorable as have heretofore been paid here, they would commence the erection of salting works in this city at once. They will also want large quantities of cabbages, tomatoes, small onions and string beans. The llusiness Men's association, believing it would be highly advantageous to our farmers and citizens generally to have them here, have undertaken to ascertain to what extent the farmers would interest themselves, and to that end will have, on Saturday, the 8th in st., and a few days thereafter, in the hands of every groceryman in Plymouth, papers for the signatures of those desirous of making contracts The first to sign will have the preference when contracts are awarded. Farmers, please mention this to your neighbors and get as many interested as possible. I)atl of Mm. Welch. The death of Mrs. F. M. Welch occured about noon Satuaday. II er death occured at 12.45 of heart troubl.
