The two men arrested at Donaldson, for robbery and assault respectively, by Constable Klinger, assisted by Marshal Myers, will have their hearing before 'Squire Keevcs on Monday. They are still in jail. The court house has been a rather dull locality, so far as local news is concerned. Milliken, traveling passenger agent of the L. & N. Ry., is in the city today looking after the Georgia Colony business. C. M. Brooke, editor of the Missouri and Kansas Fanner, is expected here from Kansas City to visit relatives Mrs. Brooke is now here. Miss Hattie Morris will leave this evening for Argos, where she will join her friend, Miss Stell Taber and they will start for Oberlin, Ohio. Dr. J. II. Wilson has been called to Valparaiso for one day of this week to assist Dr. 1). J. Loring in performing a delicate surgical operation. Jacob (leiselman, who has been con nected with the Independent com posing rooms, returned to his home at Culver City Saturday evening. Mr. Welby, representing the Medica and Surgical Register, is in our city, in vestigating the professional standing of the physicians in the county. Nils Lindquist and Tabe How re turned to their studies at the Hahne mann medical college in Chicago to day, together with Dr. Dickiison. The joint four-county institute a Monterey, Pulaski county, Saturday was a decided success. Supt. Fish ant a number of Marshall county's teachers were in attendance.

Mrs. Elizabeth Strickler Pyke died at South Bend on Saturday of heart disease. She was IK) years old and leaves 11 children, one of whom is Mrs. Mary Carson of this county. The general store of (J. II. (ireiger, Hanna, was broken into by robbers, tho safe drilled and exploded, and &Q in cash and some twenty-live gold an.' silver watches secured. Justice Reeves today found Charles Wolf guilty of assault and battery with intent to kill, and bound him over to the circuit court. In default of iuu bonds, he's in jail. The Methodist church, like its do nomination in general, is observing this week as one of prayer. A meeting will be held each evening from 7 to 8 at the church, and all are invited. A lad of 11 robbed the Wabash ticket ollice at Huntington, securing !?:r.ll. He claimed Fort Wayne as his home, and I was learned that he had escaped from the Feeble-Minded institute there. Charles Henry, from Donaldson, made his bow in 'Squire Reeves' court today. He was charged with larceny, and was bound over to the circuit court for trial in the sum of $100. He couldn't give bonds, and is in the jail. Miss Dollie Reeves entertained a

small party of friends at the home of her father, ex-Senator Reeves, Saturday evening. One of the enjoyable fea tures was the magnificent piano numbers rendered by Mrs. Brown. A "graduate" from the Warsaw liquor cure was returning home Saturday, and while waiting for a train to take him to Roahester he "fell by the wayside." In consequence, he is now a patient at the Plymouth institute. O. F. Ketcham was in Bourbon today. The remains of his daughter, Bessie Ketcham, who died several years ago, were exhumed there and brought to this city, where they were re-interred in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery. John C. Haag, foreman of the present ury in the circuit court, wis taken vioently ill of cramp colic after reaching iome Saturday night. It was not exected he could get back to court to serve in the pending case, but he came in today far from well. Simon Ensign, of Valparaiso, who was confined at Havana, Cuba, for 20 years, has tiled at Washington a claim for $200,000 against the Spanish gov ernment. Ensign was suspected of sympathy with the rebels and was im prisoned without a trial. 11. (!. Thayer has consented to deiver his lecture upon "Paul's journey hrough Rome" in. the auditorium of the N. I. N. College at Valparaiso to morrow evening. Mr. Thayer's adaress is becoming much sought after in this ortion of the state just now, and meets with general favor. From Wednesday's Daily. Kendall's store is being wired today for electric lights. Mesdames Bowell and Lamson drove to Bremen to spend the day. Mesdames Parkerand Simons are vis iting with Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Wheeler at Edgewater, Ills. Miss Brass, who has visited Miss Thayer, returned to her home in Indianapolis this morning. Carl Kleopfer left last night to re sume his studies at the Orchard Lake military academy in Michigan. Messrs. McKinney, Tanner, Fish and Reeve, with their ladies, will form a sleighing party to Argos this evening. Manager C. A. Reeves and William Quails, of the telephone exchange, are in Argos today putting up a new line. The ollicers-elect of the Sons of Yeterans will be installed on Friday evening. All members of the 0. A. R are invited. The new ollicers of the G. A. R. and of the Women's Relief Corps were join.ly installed last evening, the ceremonies being conducted by Capt. Amasa John son. The petition of Frank Putman, one of the Jones medicine company, for a writ of habeas corpus will be heard by Judge Capron in the court room this evening. M. A. Coby, who lives a couple of miles east of town, brought a hog into the local market today which tipped the beam at 700 pounds. Becker has been the pleasant scene of a sort of extended family reunion which has lasted several days. Among those present are their sons, Fred, Theodore and Thomas J. Becker, of Chicago, and Isaac, of Columbia City. He has the newspaper to sell ana space in his columns to rent. Can any one inform us why he should be ex pected to give away either one or the other? He can do so if he chooses, and does as a matter of practical fact fur nish a great deal of space rent free But it does not follow that he ought to be expected to do so. It should be re cognized as a contribution exactly as would the giving away of sugar and cofTee by the groceryman, But strange to say it is not looked upon in that light at all, yet every mau knows the existence of a newspaper depends jus as much on the rental of space and the sale of his paper, as the merchant's success depends on selling his goods instead of giving them away.
