he was struck by the tonal diftere:: of their groans. At once he commi. sioned the royal carpenter to constnu a series of stocks in which he pla freight captives whose howls of pai when the soles of their feet were struc' by the rod were so carefully arrange that they made a perfect octave. Th: seemed such a success that he had second frame constructed for the fe: of eight more wretches whose a vera? groans ranged a full octave highe. The harp was now complete. On it h proposed to play melodies and starte in to practice the national air. His proj ect was to regulate the length of th: note by the violence or the blow. A first the scheme did not succeed at al" for the reason that the captives, hit!. erto used to hard hits alone, howle; loudly each time, and with little differ ence in force. At last he arranged it hovVever, so that the groans becam; proportioned to the blows. But the in strument never got quite In tune. In cessant was the cry of some of th animated notes, others would not s.ouni'i at all at the right time. The heather king had to give it up. The duconU were too painful for fresh sets of prisoners, the human notes would never work just right.

From that day until he died he suffered agonies from hunger and thirst and gradually wasted away until he was a mere skeleton. He begged plteously for food and water, and sametimes they were given him, but the two three mouthfuls of this he was able to take came up almost immediately, harlng never found their way to the stomach any further than the obstruction. Skilled physicians fried in vain to remove the obstruction, even cutting open the stomach in their efforts to reach it. After the mar died the doctors cut him open and removed the part of the esophagus in which the stone was lodged.
