It i.s no doubt true that President Cleveland swelled with pride when he Ieirned that his message cn the Monroe doctrine had been read in the public schools of liult'alo. Who can blame him i

Aldkiimex Maxey and O'Keefe, who according to the decision of the supreme court are now out of a job, have the satisfaction of knowing that they have to a large degree, conducted themselves in a gentlemanly manner while holding their peculiarly trying position. These gentlemen have shown on more occasions than one that they have the interest of Plymouth at heart, and have held aloof from party bickerings on more occasions than one while occupyings seats in the city council.

An exchange exultently remarks that ".now the people may know wtat Cleveland was doing when oat hunting ducks."

A luipT yni'iiiin. Nearly everybody in town, and many from the country too, have heard the Ptegina at shadel & Reynold's drug store but it stills contirues to be an attraction. Kloepfer's basement is proving a great attraction to holiday shoppers. It contains many toys and novelties that are attractive no: more for beauty or utility than an account ot the low prices at which they are marked to sell. Kentschler is showing a particularly tine line of candies which ought to be of particular interest to those who are sharpening their swee. teeth for holiday sweetmeats. Kuhn & :oh, the very popular clothiers, in the new Kuhn building, are offering Christmas bargains in handkerchiefs, muillers, umbrellas and neckwear that will make the most acceptable of presents without involving much ex pense. They are catering to a steady

trade and doing business on the princi

ple that a pleased customer is a

customer. Pall & Carabin are in the line of re

tad trade with a host of things to delimit the hearts of shoppers at Christmas time or at any other season. One lady remarked yesterday that she could save money on handkerchiefs by going there and if that is true no doubt the same thing would be true cf a line cloak or a dress pattern. Their tr ide is brisk in novelties and staples of every description. Carpenter Je P-sworth are offering bargains in handkerchiefs, napkins, table linen, umbrellas, kid gloves and many other things especially appropriate to the reason. They pride themselves on always being up to standard on qualities and down to bed reck on

prices so that shoppers can hardly fail

to make satisfactory purchases there at any season. Leonard's-on-Laporte-street is still headquarters for china and table ware of every description and is proving an irresistable atti action to many gift seekers and buyers for table and home decoration. Leonard's Miocenes are also especially to be referred to mi ac-

A I.ottlo of (limit PoutU-rwith the Kein Haut of a I'ue Found at the S.iukt illicit Mill at luuooil. Wednesday, about noon, considerable excitement was created at In wood by the discovery of a bottle of giant powder against the south end of Linkenhell's mill there. Piotruding from the bottle was the charred end of a burnt fuse, which gave the location of the powder a look of suspicion. In an interview with Chas. Linkenhelt regarding the matter, he seemed to be at a loss to give a plausable reason why an attempt should be made to destroy the old mill. lie informed us that the mill was purchased by his father some time last month through a mortgage and the amount given was nearly double what the property was actually worth. It had been reported, he further states, that the mill was heavily insured, but the facts are that there is not one dollar of insurance on the building, and the insurance companies even refused to take the risk. It is a mystery that will probably never be solved. There being no known enemies to the present owner, leaves but one other conclusion to be drawn, and that is that someone has done the act with but one intention to locate an exciting episode in In wood.

A New Way f Making an Affidavit f Newspaper Ir-n;ttioii. We are an admirer of anything that savors of mother wit. At Taylorville, HI., there is a man by the name of Prank Peed who edits a daily paper known as the " Preeze." To gaze upon his figure as he perambulates along the street, or to look upon his features when in repose, one would not for a moment believe that he was the originator of the numerous witty puns that appear from day to day. The latest effort of our friend Heed is worthy of being presented to the fraternity of Indiana. This effort was brought forth in the shape of an affidavit, which appeared a few days ago. It is as follows: Statu of Illinois, ClIIUSTIAX CofXTY, :' Frank Heed, being first duly sworn on oath states that he is editor and proprietor of the Preeze, a daily and weekly publication of general circulation throughout Christian county, the former more particularly in Taylorville. AM-ant further states that during the week ending December 11, 1V..", he received three ollicial notices from the postollice department to discontinue his publication to three different parties in Christian county because they refused to take the paper from the ofliee. They were D. Stapleton and Mrs. John Law, Stonington, and John Hawkins, of Palmer. Affiant further states that tothebest of his knowledge and belief they are the only ones. He states, however, that upon receiving notice the names were immediately erased from the subscription books, and further, alliant sayeth not. Subscribed and sworn to before me this HHh day of December, A.D. IS'j.j. Cakimi: A. Iti:i:i, seal. Notary Public. At fust glance, the above may appear ridiculous to the average reader, but the figures represent the largest sworn statement of discontinuances ever made in the history of journalism.
