WHERE DOES BRYAN STAND? One of the amendments to the Chicago platform offered by Senator Hill read a#-*'follcws: ""Our advocacy of the in depend e«t tfr«e cotalaseof sliver 'beingbasedon toe belief that such coinage will effect and maintain a .parity between gold and sBlver at the ra.tio ,of 16 tb 1, we declare as a pledge of our sincerity that if such free coinagre shall fail to effect such parity within one year from lta enactment such coinage shall thereupon be suspende'd." 'In his speech to the convention Bryan s-coffed at thfe amendment. He siaid: We reply that when we advocate a thing which we 'believe will bte successful we are not compelled to raise a dWbt as to Var own sincerity."
Then Bryaiii 1b confident that the value of free coinage silv©r dollars will be equal .to that of gold dollars, comments the Chicago Tri'bune. He is go absolutely sure of it that he cannot tolerate an amendment which contemplates the possibility of their .being less valuable.
Then Bryan is convinced that the unlimited silver dollar at the ratio of •16 to 1 will be just as good as the coin whtch Altgeld calls a 200-cent dollar. The latter does not think so. He be•lieves the tfree coinage silver dollar will be worth only half as much as the present dollar.
When Bryan makes his speech of ac•cep^tance on Wednesday he ouight to go into this subject a little more thorrnly than he has. If he has not changed hie mind on the subject he &hbuld explain clearly why he believes Ihe free coinage dollar will be worth as much as the gold dollar, and if he pretentis to 'believe as he said he did at Chicago, that the parity will be •mklntbineid and the value of the dollar be unchanged he must explain how the higher prices which he and other Popocrats promise are to be secured. How is the farmer to get $1 a hushel for wheat if the purchasing (power of the {loiter is to remain that of the gold dollar?
This Cannot be meanly a master of hYnd faith. There must be reasons which convince him that the value ofall the silver in the world w*.H be doubk'3 bv the pAssutge of a free coinage law. The reasons should he etated tfuSly 5pc» that businftw? men can judge bf theiT weight. Or if Bt-ya-n has ohansred his mind ai*d concluded thnt the parity canwclt be maintained and •hfc-t tthe free silver dollar will not he worth .as much as the goM dollar, then he ou^ht to admit fthivt that will be Ithe case and endeavor to show who «w'll be benefited thereflly. iWtn th® unlimited 16 to 1 dollar
