Joint Ratification Meeting and Basket Tic-Nic. There will he a Democratic Joint KatiGcalion Meeting an 1 Basket Pic Xic between the rounties of the'ly and Johnson, in Joseph V. Wo()I.EX, D. D. Banta, Frank Landers, and others. Let there be a general and spontaneous outpouring of tho people on this occasion, and let all come with well filled baskets. 1. S. Since the above was in type a letter has been received from Joskfh K. Mc'Poxai.d, Democratic candidate for Governor, stating that he will positively be present and address the meeting. C3. We rerc informed theother day that one or two of the county candidates on the bhoddy ticket consider their chances and that of the entire ticket, so perfectly hopeless that they talk of declining the race. It may be hiere rumor, but it would be a sensible move on their part, for a man might as Avell jump into a burning line kiln and hope to escape BuCbration as to think of being elected cn the abolition ticket in Shelby county this j car. Hex. Sherman's Letter. The special attention of the reader is invited to the letter ofGen. Sherman, in another column. It is pointed and explicit, and a wet blanket on the negro recruiting business.

fitaT There are a few able bodied abolitionists in this city that are still bloviating about a "vigorous prosecution of the war," and of course enthusiastic advocates of the negro substitute plan. Would it not be more creditable to these men, if they believe the war is right and just, as they advocate, to enter the service themselves and help achieve the freedom of their equals, the negro, instead of meanly and cowardly endeavoring to shift the duty upon the dusky of shoulders of Sambo?

The long looked for and much needed rain came last week in quite a plentiful supply, dampening the earth ft fetfnsiderable distance down, reviving vegetation and cooling (for a day or two chilling) the atmosphere. It is believed that many fields of corn is not yet past being materially benefited by it, and that the late potatoes may yet turnout a fair crop. The pasture especially, which was quite burned up, has been materially benefited, and fields that looked as il fire had passed over them now present a decidedly verdant appearance, and promise good picking for fome time to come.

fiijr The effulgent Will. C. Moreau is announced to make a speech in Indianapolis on the 2")th, before the ''Radical Democracy," (Fremonters). It would appear by this that "Richard is himself some more.'' S3u John C. Green has not yet returned from his Southern negro recruiting tour, and we believe there is no definite information as to his fucccss in procuring the ebonys, but the inference is it has not been first rate. Since the commencement of the war Mr. Creen has been loud mouthed in its advocacy l'C has urged men to enter tie army and , I it 1 . il. , l - l lr

The question is, why don't he enlist and thus make good his professions by practice ? Godey for September As usual is promptly on our table. There has been so much said in commendation of this old aud popular publication, and like pure Wine it appears to grow better as it increases in age, that say what we will it is

only the repetition of an oft told tale. It is me of the few publications in this country that has stood the changes and vicissitudes of time for near thirty years ; and the fact of its having continued to prosper for such a number of years is tho best e idenee of its intrinsic worth and appreciation by a discriminating community. The present number, as usual, is replete with illustrations oh steel and wood, fashion plates, designs for embrodery, fancy needle work, A c. The literary department is of a high order, entertaining aud instructive. Terms ? a yearAddress Louis A. Co-ley, Philadelphia l'a.

Game Laws. Mr. Editor: You committed an error in the last issue of the "Volunteer"' in saying that ''the law prohibits the killing ofQuails between the firt of March and the first of September.'' The "fine time" you promise tho Sportsmen after the first proximo is 'hop defi-red." The (iamo law a amended by the Legislature that adjourned to Madison prohibits the killing of Pheasants and (Jualis between the first day of March and the first day of October. Attorney. The Li:aolf. Armin; Itself. Once on a time there were several military companieg in this vicinity, organized we believe under the State militia law commonly known as the "Legion." They used to play "bold sojer" around the streets here on Saturdays, in brass coats and blue buttons, marching and counter. marching up and down the streets. At the setting in of cold weather they discontinued to drill, and for one cause and another the companies became disorganised and their arms were delivered up. They of right should have been returned to the Arsenal at Indianapolis, in order to save the county and the men who went on the bond at the time of their issue, from liability. Instead of this they have been distributed among the abolition Lcagueites in this city, who might have been seen toting them home at a late hour a few nights since, in good deal the same manner that a man would hayc carried home a stolen sheep, through lanes and by-ways. ly whose authority, if any, these arms are thus distributed, we are not prepared to sa-) nor to what use they purpose putting them nor do we care, unless some of the numerous threats that have been made are put iu execution, then farciccll muskets, Leaguers and all The Lady's Friend, For September. A touching steel engraving, called "The IJlind Piter,"' opens the September number of The L.vpy s Ukienp, This is followed by the usual double steel Fashion Plate, richly colored. llytfe way, jue note that one o1 thQJadies in the Plate is wearing the Russian boot, with high heel, now so popular in

Paris. Then follow the usual numerous engravings of ladies and children's fashions, which so delight the fairer portion of creation.

and often so puzzle us gentlemen. The music ol this number is, "Who Speaks First?"' a (iallop. The literary contributions are as varied and interesting as usual including "One of Many," by Aunt Annie; "A Spinsters Story ;"' Cousin Winifred ;" "Pauline .
