VOLUNTEER.
LOCAL. t9 We understand that John C. Green ha been commissioned by O. !'. Morton as an Agent fur Shelby county for the procuring of nezro substitutes to CM the quota of the county, and has left on his mission. The question is, for whom is the substitutes pro2ureJ? There has been no public meetings by whjeh any such action could be authoriied, as we are aware. Is he a special apent of 4he League, and are the ebony recruits to bo credited as sHtitutos of the truly loyal only ? It is a matter we care but little about, having no anxiety to be represented by a negro, even in a negro war, but as we learn His Excellency refuses to appoint but one Ajent for a county, we are rather anxious to ascertain if the League is monopolizing the ticgro substitute business ? - - Uf l'Rmso It is rumored that the company ofono hundred days volunteers from this county are expected home the latter part tf this or the fore part of next week, and fclso that a move is on foot to give them a complimentary supper. We are free to say that we can neither Pee the necessity nor propriety of this step. When the 51st, 33d nnd ISth Kegiments returned on their 30 days furlough as ro enlisted vetrans, after two years hard service in the field and participating in numerous hard fought battles, ?o such public ovation was tendered them, nnd it would be palably unjust to theso men to now extend the bountiful hospitalities of the roam unity to these one hundred days men, who h.?fe seen no actual service, and have merely been "rusticating" as it may be called. We do not believe" they expect or desire it, and it certainly woulu !.c tantemount to a slight or even insult to the three companies of vetrans who came and went without even so much as a passing notice, and would hardly be apt to create pleasing emotions in their hearts when they heard of it, as hear of it they certainly would. Ctg The. Banner of last week announced that its publication would be suspended for a indefinite time If it should never revive there will be so much less falsehood in the world one medium less to convey the loathing doctrines of abolitionism before anausuted community one less fermentor of public discord and anarchy. We however regret its suspension at this time, as it was doing much to disgust the sensible portion of the party, of which it was the accredited organ, with the destructive policy and bcastiliness of Shody-loyality. T:ie W KATHF.it. Well, it is a matter oM congratulation that the heated term is at an end. Monday afternoon and evening was probably as hot as flesh and blood could en dure, how hot we arc not able to say , but if abolitionists ever get where it is hotter (and we are inclined to think they will not get their just deserts if they do not) they will be entitled to our temporary commisseration, whether they get it or not. Having exceeded the calculations of the hcrmometor maker, it concluded to quit, and during Tuesday there was a visible chang in the atmosphere,. and during the day one or two copious showers of rain, which completed the cooling process and refreshed the parched earth and wittering vegetation. 5 Mean and Petty PnoscrurTioN. We learn that the "loyal" directors of the Shelbyville and Morristown Turnpike have removed Mr. Johnson, the toll gnto keeper at this end of the road. fur no other apparent reason than because he was a Democrat Mr. Johnson has had four sons in the arm-, and we bo. lieve there are still three of them in the ser vice, if not killed, and one at home wounded, but this fact counts nothing towards allaying the mean and vindictive spirit of abolitionism he was a Democrat, opposed to the infamous and destructive polity of this weak, corrupt, thieving and detestable administration, and consequently must "walk the plank" and give place to one whose political sentiments were in accordance with the views of the abolition directors. New Firm and New Stock. Messrs. 'ainrii & Pi.Airt, as will beolservcJ by adver tisement elsewhere, have formed a co-part- j .nl: and purpose carrying on the Hard- j -.ware, CMove and tinware !usiness in al its ' . vari)tis hranelies. I hey are now receiving their now stock, comprising every article in t the lite, selected with care and discretion, nnd purpose keeping their assortment full nnd complete, and tlose desiring nny article in the Jine will find it to their advantage ti give them a call, as they are'enabled to offer rare Imrsains. Mr. Wraith has been known for several years in this city a? a fair dealer and courteous gentleman and will cive the bu slness his personal and constant attention ,sSr Dan Rice's Show met with a scries of mishaps on the day advertised to exhibit in this city. Taxes for 1864. The following are the names of a few of the heaviest tax payers in Shelby county. The figures represent the tax assessed against them for ISC 4, as taken from the Auditors boots. It is needless to speak of the increase over any previous year, nor to pay that the prospect of a like increase for years to come is promising,. especially if affairs continue
under the guidance of our present rulers, ! Stats and National. The thoughtless will exclaim "well these men are rich and can afford to pay it" for i getting that the tax of the man of limited means, by whom a few dollars is more severly felt than as many hundreds by his rich and affluent neighbor, has increased in a like ratio: JACKSON TOWXSDIP.
