it was well understocd that they were to vote for McClellan. The late Indiana tate Convention was composed overwhelmingly of friends of McClellan. And yet there are intimations that Gen. McClell an w ill not even receive the vote cf Indiana at the Chicago Convention. We do not believe one w ord of this. We do not believe the gentlemen selected by the District Conventions will violate their instructions and contemn the wishes of their constituents

by voting against their favorite. Xor do we. believe that the four gentlemen selected by the State Central Committee to represent the State at large, will violate the well known wishes of the people. We do not say thatno one but McClellan could carry Indiana, but we do say that there is no certainty that any one but McClellan could do it. With McClellan for President the Democratic State ticket could be elected by an overwhelming majority, and thus exert an immense influence upon the Presidential election in other States.

Cut if defeated in October, who imagines that a different result could be obtained in

November ? No one doubts thc entire soundness of Gen. McClellan on the great question of the day. He occupies the position early assumed by the Democratic party as to the mannep in which this unhappy and fratricidal war should be conducted. Neither he nor the Democratic party have abandoned that position. Uutlci, Uurnside, Meagher, Shepley,

Wallace, and other pretended Democratic Generals ' bent the - pregnant hinges of the knee that thrift might follow fawning," but McClellan gallantly maintained his position, and for doing so was deprived of his command by Lincoln and Stanton, and has ever since been persecuted by them with shameful malignity. He has borne all, however.

It was a general remark by all that they never before saw eo large a crowd in winch such perfect order prevailed there was not a drunken man seen during the Jay, nor a fight, or even the slightest approach to

mum and crest fallen. Thc crowd was liberally interspersed with men, who, but a short time previous, had been in sympathy with thc Republican party, and ardent sup porters of the administration, but were now seeking the light, and expressed the determination to vote thc Democratic ticket henceforward and forever.

The meeting was addressed by Hon. M. M. Ray and K. M. Hokd in the forenoon, in a

eloquent and impressive manner, but as n e were not present are unablo to give an outlino even of their remarks, but hear them spoken off in commendatory terms by all present. In the afternoon lion. T. A. Hendricks spoke for near two hours. His review of thc military and civil course of the administration was able, logical, and convincing, i I is expose of the murderous fanaticism of Lincoln, as exhibited in his famous '"To whom it may concern" epistle, was able and scathing, and no man could have listened to it without conceiving a most- insufferable contempt and loathing for the miserable negro infatuated buffoon. He appeal to the peopleed

and inflexible purpose ol' the Democratic

party of this State, acting in concert with all patriotic citizens who respect the purity of the ballot and desire the public gord to maintain by fore, if need be and at all hazards, the right of he people to free and fair elections, we condemn any attempt at resistance of the laws before constitutional remedies are exhausted, and earnestly advise all men to abide patiently the action of the chosen representatives of the Democratic party at Chicago, on the 2'.'th of Augut, looking for

ward to the coming election lor a peaceful j and constitutional redress of grievances more, j effectual than violence. SeconJ In times of public peril like the present, ami in view of what are believed to be well founded apprehensions of attempts on the part of those in authority to interfere bv military power with the freedom of elections, patriotism and prudence alike demand

that the constitutional right of the people to keep and bear arms as a necessary means of defense to a free State, should not be violated nor abandoned; and it is thc right und duty of all good citizens to co operate in open lawful organizations for the protection of the freedom of elections and for the preservation of peace and constitutional order and the rights of tho neonle within the State : as well

- -!- - , - as for its defense against invasion and we especially recommend to the people in all their counties, townships and election precincts thorough organization for these ends. Third As manifest inequalities exist in the assignment of quotas to thc different States, unde rthe late cail for 500.0)0hicn, which have created the belief that there lias beenan unfair discrimination in favor of cer tain Kastorn States to thc prejudice of Indiana and other States, this committee has assum

THE CONVENTION

The joint Convention for Shelby and

cock counties, for the nomination of Sena

tor and Joint Representative, assembled at the Seminary at 10 o'clock, and was called to order by Alonzo Blair, Chairman of the Central Committee. A temporary organization was affected by selecting Stephen Major, of Shelby, Chairman, and Alonzo Blair and Sample of Hancock, Secretaries and afterwards by the selection of G. W. M'Connell, of Shelby, Chairman, and Henry (iaines, of Shelby, and of Hancock, -Secretaries. (Tho proceedings not having conic to

hand we arc unable to give the proceedings in detail.) James L. Mason, of Hancock, was put in nomination for Senator, and Geo. C. TnAcnek, of Shelby, for Joint Representative. There were apprehensions that considera ble difficulty would be experienced in making a selection for Senator, but it turned out that the rumors of dissatisfaction had no real foundation in fact, were the idle rumors of a few political schemers and were entirely dis regarded by the Convention, which went right along and performed its business in a straight forward and honorable manner, leaving the wire-workers and schemers to nurse or abandon their nicely laid plans as they choose.
