Ai last a.-counta au cubit was being made to take Peieraburgh with the intention cf cutting off the rebel Bupplies and thoroughly investing Richmond, but thus far the work progress slowly, although the carnage is fearful itST Congressional Committee has just closed its labors of investigating the rascnljiies perpetiated in the New York Custom House, and discovereii that for nearly two years past through the connivance of numerous ohim! in this institution cargoes of goods indispensable to the rebels have been shipped, all of which have fallen into rebel hinds. The parties im plicated were either partners iu the transaction (which paid hugely) or received a .valuable consideration for their services. The question will . very naturally occur to the reader, what has been done with these men that have so directly and material y rendered aid and comfort to the rebels in arms? TluX. Y. World, which was the first to exposa the scheme and insist it should be investigated, answers the question in the following brief paragraph : Tbo office-holders who ate responsible for this complicity vith, or sutferance of, tlie most infamous form of treason are btili retained in their places by the Secretary of the Treasury, ami will be till they and their superiors arc put out of power next November by an indignant ami outraged people. These factions have been equally the curse cf the country, and it is the duty of the country to rally at the next election and put down Lincoln as well as his confederate JetT. Davis. The Return of Vallandigham. On the first page of to-days Volunteer will be found the speech of Hon. C. L. Yailandigham delivered before the Democratic Convention at Hamilton, Ohio, on the 15th of the present month, whereiu he enunciates his reasons for returning and his probable course of action in the future. The position he takes, that he has a constitutional and lawful right to reside on the soil of Ohio, is correct, and noon? but a truckling minion of despotism, can gainsay it. Ye find the following letter in the Cincinnati Commercial, under the above heading, which we ask the community to carefully read and consider. U. S. Gbn'l Hospital, Diy. No. 8, Chattanooga, Tens'., JuneG, 1S34, Editoes .Commercial : I would like to ask through the medium of your paper a few questions concerning the sanitary goods that are sent to the sick and wounded soldiers. Now 1 have been here for nearly three weeks, and the sick and wounded have got nothing, but what the Government furnishes them ; they have not seen- anything that the Sanitary Commission have sent bnt a little clothing. Now any man or woman of common sense knows that a sick or wounded ! man can't liveou bean soup and boiled pork, and that fat enough to fry a pound or two of lard out of it. They (the sick and wounded) must have some lighter diet, but I would ak the people of the North if they senrl anything for the sick ? if they do where, I would ask, does it go to? There must be something wrong somewhere. Men are dying here every day at the rata of six or seven every twenty-four hoars, and what is the cause of it ? It is the food they get and nothing else. The doctors here are, most of them, one hundred days men, men that could not get anything to do at home, and have come down here to kill men. Yours. &c. CHARLFSL. WRIGHT. Co. I , 00th llegt. Ohio Vol. Iufty. The fact about this Sanitary arrangement i that the machinery by which it is operated is complex and expensive there are hundreds of agents employed to solicit contributions, there is a large force of loyal office! s and if a few boxes of goods are finally gotten' ready for shipment, they of course must be accompanied by a staff of agents all these agents and officers of course have to be paid and tbGjr expenses born. It therefore is not i , auipnsiug uiui. me souiei seutom it ever deriveg My be-nefit from tll9 institntioni as liberal as the contributions have been, exceeding twenty millions, as is reported, in the last two years. Another and most objectionable feature of the Sanitary concern is that it is managed solely by clerico-political demagogues and violent abolition partisans, no guarantee whatever that the small moity that would naturally fall to the lot of the sick and wounded soldier is ever thus appropriated.- Ye have taken some little trouble to enquire of returned soldiers who have been iu the hospital if they had ever received any benefit from these Sanitary supplies we found one who had received a few onions and potatoes, and another a can of spoiled peaches, eaid to have been sent by some association to the hospital this is the snm total of our information in upwards of twenty enquiries. We should like to believe this society was honestly and fairly conducted for the actual benefit of the soldier, but th facts guarantee no snch ccnclcsion. "ST List werk Gen.
