Early Conventions. In consequence of the late day pet for the holding of the Democratic National and State Conventions it has been argued thata necessity exists for the early holding of County Conventions that the

jwST General Sherman, during his stay at Meridian, captured a rebel mail bag, in which was a note from Rev. J. L. Pettigrew, chaplain of the Thirty-first Gcor gia regiment, to his brother and sister. Mr. IVttigrew was left behind with the wounded rebel soldiers after the battle of

especially local ones, are preferable, but

it may be said an emergency exists this year for the early holding of county Conventions. The work of the campaign is usually performed by the local candidates and politicians in their respective localities, and it is all essential that a sufficient time to thoroughly discuss the numerous and momentous questions at issue he had tho National Convention is called for the 4th of July anil the State

Convention for tho 12th of the same month, leaving but ninety-one days in which to make the Canvass if thirty, forty, or sixty days can be gained by the holding of a County Convention it is just so much more tiu.o in which to discuss the issues affecting the weal or woe of the pet pie so much more time for the people to read nnd foim their opinions as to which pirty is tight and which is wrong. If the time thus gained is propeily employed an immense sight of woik may be done especially if the local candidates me active energetic men have the will and ability nnd apply themselves to the woik. Our opponents, thc Republicans, already have their State ticket in the field and are pios.-euting the campaign energetically, although quietly, by the lavish distiilntion of their paitizan papers and doe-iniu'iits a system of tactic the Democracy must immitate in a manner equally as liberal if the people are but correctly infonned of the real . w-uea at

It will be the fault of the Democratic party if they are not thus informed. 1 am fiimly of opinion that the Demo

ciats aie the most foi midable enemies' we have. If they were to get in power North, it would only be' a uenewal of the war,

and all its past bloody scenes and horrors. The best thing for ns will be the continuation of the Republican administration. There is a good deal in the abovo that is true. If the Democrats were to assume the responsibilities of the government, they could not even think of closing the war upon any other basis than the absolute restoration of the Union. No doubt such of thc southerners as 6ecretly desire a restoration of the Union or who despair of a southern confaderacy are anxious that the Democratic party should succeed in the next presidential election, ko that terms might be accordid them

which would make a Union possible;;

but all southerners who are in earnest in desiring the establishment of a new confederacy must, from the nature of things, hope for the retention of the Republican party in power. BJT.A difficulty occurred at Shelhyville ye sterday uiorninjr, betweensome soldiers and citizens. in which several on both sides were injured, some of them seriously. The origin ot the trouble, we understand, was a quarrel between a butternut and three or four soldiers. Other citizens interfered and

drove the soldiers off, firing a number of shots

When companies shall have been organized some future day should be fixed for assembling and reporting to the camp of rendezvous. In the meantime the men should arrange their private affairs for their absence from home ns furloughs will not be allowed. A fair division of the call will retire two regiments of nine hundred and ten men each to be raised in each Congressional District. To make it pleasant to those concerned it

will be the aim to combine in a regiment thc

hist ten companies raised in any district. Uy order of the Governor. Laz. Noni.E, Adjutant General Indiana.

The Debt. The following statement of the present indebtedness of tho United States, and the brief time in which it has been created, and its comparison with the debt of Great Britain, may be nn item of interest to those of au investigating turn of mind : The question of debt and taxation is

occupying the minds of the people here somewhat. The debt of Great Britain is

84.000,000,000 of dollars, and ' it commenced in the reign of Charles II. Our debt has reached that, and the war has only been carried on three years. Congress has appropriated for the War Department alone. $4,004,000,000. The expenses of this Administration are over double that of the cost ot the whole Government from 1789 to 1SG0 seventytwo years.
