In vain did LouiXVI. wear its flower in his buttonhole, and in vain were samples of tho tubers distributed amoti the fanners ; they gave them to their pigs, but would not we them themselves! At last Partneuter, the chemist, who well knew the nutritive properties of the potato, and was most anxious to see-it in general use. Lit upon the following ingenious plan. He planted a good breadth of potatoes at Sabloms,

close to Paris, and paid great attention to their cultivation. When the roots were nearly ripe, he put notice around the field that all persons who stole away any of the potatoes would be prosecuted with the utmost rigor of the law. No sooner were the new roots thus forbidden, as it were by authority, than all persons seemed eager to eat them, and in a fortnight the whole crop waa stolen, and without a doubt eaten. The new vegetable having been found to be excellent food was soon after cultivated in every part of the kingdom.
t3T There are two reasons wfcy we do not tru6t a man : one because we don't know him, and tho other bccAtua ye do.
.-T An honest Hibernian was obserred, a few day hince. intently engaged in examining very closely one of the draft lists, now posted throughout the city. At length he discovered hi own name, fie gazed at it rather ambiguously for a moment, and leisurely inserting lu's hand into a capacious pocket, aud drawing therefrom a black lead-pencil, very coolly and effectually erased his name from the list. As he returned the pencil to his pocket, with a satisfactory expression of countenance, he exclaimed. "There now, be dad, I've scratched me name. They ran't see it and they'll not be afther drafting ma at all, at all !" Toledo Commercial,
Cacrct League. We find in the Washington correspondence of the American Republic, (a Cincinnati paper,) the followiag: "The Union League Rooms are open to members of the order at all times. This order now numbers nearly a million members. They are thoroughly organized in all the States where loyalty is on t spoken. The influence of this secret organization is immense. As one who is posted, I am free tt say that this is a thoroogh-going radical machine ; that it will not halt in the good work until slavery hall be
(crnnhed beneath the wheels of progress."
It is well enugh for n to gt timely warning of th magnitude ni yx paratioa whi.h our political adve rari aie nuking tn consolidate in themelve thepwer whuh they have o grossly perverrd. For onie time it theie has b-en an ominous faience on the part of the Republicans concerning this secret organization, styled a Union League. No one supposed, however, that it had been disbanded. Emboldened by past successes, by the admitted strength of the order, and by thoughts of anticipated triumph in the fall election, the revolutionary party openly proclaims the continued e'xistenco of their secret association, and exults in the idea of its numbers and vitality. Perhaps one cause ot the almost riotous satisfaction felt by the radicals for the secret society in which they concoct new assaults upon the laws of the land, is the absolute assurance that it will neverlote any of its members on any battle-field. It is very comforting to the anti-slaverj people to reflect that thy have a compact body of selfish and wily adhirents whom no consideration of pride or patriotism will ever induce for one moment to
put their carcasses in mortal peril. The fact, too, that it is a secret association which has no sympathy for liberal principles, endears it strongly to those folks who, while prating hourly about the fieedom cf black men, hourly plot to enslave white men. The existence- of such an anti-democratic associ tion is so dangerous to public liberty, that it furnishes a new and strong reason for the utmost zeal, vigilance and energy on our part to counteract its levelling schemes. We should be united and unceasing in our labors to couceatrate in our organization all tho good and sound men of the connrry. V miut mak a common cause against a party which openly disowns all allegiance to the Constitution, and secretly prepares the machinery for its destruction. These are strong words. We use them advisedly and with perfect justice. Doth liberty nnd law are threatened by the paaty which put Abraham Lincoln in power, and which endorses his repeated usurpations, and avows its intention to put him, or some one of like views, again in the councils of tho nation and trust him with the executive management of its affairs. It is our business to rescue these precious inheritance for ourselves and for those who shall succeed us Cleveland Plaindtaler.
What tho Abolition Movement has Accomplished. The New York Herald, in noticing the article of the New York Tribune tracing the connection between the organization of the Abolition Societies in the North in 1833 and the present condition of the country, says : ' What these one hundred thousand AbolitiouUts have accomplished may be staled in a very few words. They have accomplished tho present war. They have worked for it thirty years and here it is. They have wrecked a powerful, peaceful aud happy country. They have arrayed brother against brother, father against son, children against parents. They have rilled the laud with widows and orphans. They have transformed the country into a vast graveyarl. They have hed an ocean ot blood and squandered mountains of money. They have made the air heavy with the shriek of the wounded anil the lamentation oi the mourners. They have deva-tated the tied U and plantations of the South an t destroyed the commerce of the North. Thy have given a check to the progress of civilisation and democratic institutions from which it will take years to recover. All thi they hare accomplished in thirty years. Oue hundred thousand fiends let loose from the lowest hell and inspired by the most infernal malice coul l uot have accomplished more mischief in the same space of time. If this be anything to rejoice over, let the Abolitionists rejoice. If they desire to raise a monument to perpetuate the remembrance of their triumph, our battlefields will furnish them with enough human tknll for a pyramid, and Wendell Phillips or Deecher would be only to happy to deliver the address at the laving of
the corner skull.
