The" exercises at the Hall of the Shelbyville Academy on Friday last, on the oeca'ion of the graduation of the penior cla, -Rcrcof an interesting and highly cratifving thjir-ncter. There was quite a number ul Tur citizens (but nt as many as there should hare been) present, who seemed to be both I ,deaed and surprised at the evidence of ch'4:itic acquirements evinced, reflecting rredit alike Upon the 1'rincipal, Pupil and vninmUnitr. - The exercises vers opened with prayer by Her; M?. Amk, ftilloxvc 1 by pome line singing, led by Miss. Jk::nik Smith. The readirrg-f esays by the graduating tlas were next in orier,-Rt follows: Memory's ltelics of the Past, Lh.lii: Davis AVe build our own Monuments, Fannie Hack. Night brings out the Stats, Emily McFarlanh. The Voice of Nature is that of Praise, Maoimk K. Wood. "Will makes men Giants, Sadk .WilsonThe essays were line productions, each having its peculiar merits, and if set afloat on the literary sea all would tliclt more or less d int from the criticising jvoiM. We will not attempt to say which was the best suffice Unit each was good and some wotildliMC been creditable to more experienced pens and older heads. The address of the Principal. Mr. Lynch,! to the graduating class, on awarding the diplomas, wns noble in sentiment, elegant in style, and met the highest commendatfon from all present. Uev. J. J. Smith was called upon and spoke eloquently and feelingly upon the advantages of education, and the importance of thoroughly mastering one branch before commencing another. His suggestions were pertinent and must have made a practicable impression upon the mind of all who listened. Mr,. Smyth was followed by Uev. T. Lynch, in a few timely remarks as to the importance of communities establishing and maintaining educational institutions in their midst, which not only tended to elevate the moral uml social condition of the community, but invited men of wealth and enterprise to come among them and settle. The Campbell Minstrels were present (not with blackened faces) and interspvrsed the exercises with some tine vocal and instrumental music, of a chaste and enlivening natu re. The exercises of this day marked a new epoch in the history of Shelbyville this being the first time that any scholar had ever gone forth from an educational institution bearing the diploma ofja graduate. We have not the space nor time to refer this week to the advantages of maintaining this institution, a fact that must be patent to all.
