Killing of a Provost Marshal in Rush

County. On Wednesday of last week, there was an

ua i unfortunate- md melancholy calamity oce, as , , ... f J

eure t near Manilla, in Kush county, near the county lire of Shelby. Hon. Prank Stevens, fonmerly Senator from Decatur county. a;nl Deputy .Provost Marshal for the 4th District, accompanied, by aMivCraycraft and a special Deputy whose name w.e have not lea red, went to Manilla.-, for the f urpose of commencing the enrollment. The special Deputy went into a house to make the enrollment, leaving Stevens and 'Craycraft sitting in th'eir buggy, when a party of some seven porsons arase in a.wheat Geld nearby and fired upon them, instantly killing. Mr. Stcvcas and mortally wounding Craycraft, who has s'tice died of his wounds. The special Deputy on hearing the firing ran ou-

of the house and was also fired upon, the shois pas&ing thro"S his clothin. but doing him no harm. Information of the occurrence wa3 at once sent to Indianapolis, and on the following lay a military force was sent to the locality, who arrested seven persons, txvo of them brothers, named Hilligoss, against whom circumstantial cvidnnce as the murderers is troni. We have not learned the names ot the other parties arrested, nor what evidence there is against them. The military remained in tlie vicinity until Saturday, when thev retured,, affairs having quieted down entirely. Gen. MatsfifM, commsndcr of the military, testifies to. the cordial cooperation of the citizens in the vicinity in feriting out the supposed culprits, and also to their Uniterm kindness and curtesy. We are also iuformed that he made a speech to the- soldiers and eitirens, counseling moderation and forbearance, an political topics, and a resort to arguments instead of epithets. The State Fen tint I ia commenting oathis sad affair ant!y savvs : As we have ever been, we arc yet thend. vocateof laxv ni onler. . Hoxvevcr objection.

Toe idea that every little neighborhood feud

should be mti die- an ceeaimr for calling out a military forcti-absurd ' in the extreme.

More than this,- the affair is speedily tele

graphed, over the country, and magnified into

ridiculous proportions the radical and senseless administration pre9 seize upon the oc

currences with an avidity characteristic of

morbid a-jietir.es, and at once distort and col

orthwv out of nil proportions for political

elfecfe. But this is probably characteristic,

they hare assured the rebels all the time that

the "Butternuts" or "Copperheads," as they,

in tsfteir choice vernacular term the ttemo

cir?, were going to resist the conscription,

amd they arc bound to render their secession

pro tintypes In rebeldom all the aid and com

fort that wilful lieing and malicious defama

tion can do, and assure them that the con

scription is being resisred--it will be tempo

rary aid and comfort at least, and probably

contribute something towards bolstering up and keeping alive a- while longer a corrupt'

and rotten political organization.

' But to be serious, these abolition scoun

drels have already rendered the cause of se

cession and rebclliory sufficient aid and com

fort by false and maiicious misrepreseata

tion of their opponents, and it is full time

it was stopped. If the rebellion is ever to be put down and the Union restored it can only be done by unity of sentiment in the North

and there can naver be. any unity nor the

rebellion crushed so long as a pack of dema

gogues are permitted to encourage the reb

els by the pleasing assurance that over one half the people of the North, and tlie fighting half at that, are sympathisers with the rebellion. We ask the more sensible portion of the Bernblican, union, abolition, league party, or whatever else they call themselves, to think of those things, and' govern themselves accordingly.

There are men in this e jimuunity, mercinary and ambitious creature, who, names I could mention if necessary, occupying positions of respectability and influence, who indirectly urireon these acts of ruffianism, in the hopes of driving the too forbearing Democrats into a residence, when they will endeavour to procure a military force and have it pernviner'v located in our midst or at least organize tiie "Union League'' into a
