Cartingtun's AnwiKss The attention of the reader is invited to the address of (len. Carrington, in another column. The attention of the members of the League eep"iM;iIIy il called to that clause varning the people against Secret Pollitieal Societies. Too Late. The proceedings and resolutions of the Union Township Democratic Convention wan received too late lor insertion this week. The Delegates to the County Convention are John M. Riown, George Berry, Fielding Friday, Robert. V. Dewitt, Jacob Crim, John Hester and John Cunning. The "last man and last dollar patriots" in this vicinity are very active in the race after the appointment for the position of Provost Marshall, under the Conscription Law, for this county. It is understood that Capt. McGuire was put on the track for jus tice that ho might be out of 44w way of other aspiring aspirants for the Maishalship. -, , . saj aC3u The members of the abolition League met at their den on Saturday afternoon last, and after much hard swearing and the doftruction of an tncrcditable amount of bail whisky, put in nomination a ticket. Capt. Jas. K. McGl'iRE was nominated for Justice and Nathan (Joourich forTuistee. Personally they are very fair gentlemen, but are in bad company and destined to be badly beaten; ' ('Arnox. Owners of Jacks and Stallions should bear in mind that the excise law, as amended, requires they should take out a license. RSa- The April term of the Shelby Circuit Curt commences on Monday next First Vac.k. The Constitution and ByLaws of the Democratic Club of Addison Township will be found on the first page of 1 days Voi.i'xtkfr. KSST The abolition League met again on Tuesday evening. Kdkx H. Davis, Ksq., addressed the conspirators. Jlis subject was butternuts. He stated that where he used to live in Kentucky, butternuts were verv plenty, but he never liked them they used to make him stomach sick. We think if Mr. D;iis lives long enough in this vicinity he will find butternuts equally as plenty and quite as disagreeable to his fastedious politi cal tastes. The Continental Old Folks. This celebrated troupe of Vocalists will give one of their inimitable entertainments at the Court House in this city on nextTues dwy evening. The simple announcement Will be sufficient to fill the house to overflowing, as they have attained a world wide reputation The Cincinnati Commercial thus notices their recent visit to that city : We lok for the annual return of the Continental Old Polks with the same feeling ot pleasurable expectation that we anticipate the return of the troubadours of the forests and fields The .Continental Old Polks are svi jffii. Thev came into existence with a reviving taste for the sacred songs which our ro onial cestors sang in the wilderness, as luev knelt in the cool and silence of temples not male with hands, before the great Crea tor. J his taste the 'Continental Oik Folks have perpetuated : but, closely observing its modification, have accordingly minified the character of their entertainments, mingling with its more unioue features, standard and popular ballads. As now constituted, the concert of the Cantinental Old Folks are delightful. n reproducing the costumes which were onw en regale, but which now offend all ntlr ideas or propriety in dress, they admonish ris'of the figure we are likely to cut in the eje of posterity, who will laugh as protligiously over the seoop-shovel bonnets, expanded crinolines, stove pipe tiles and baggy pantaloons of the reigning mole as we do over the powdered wigs, gigantic and overwhelming bonnets, scanty gowns, nnd flapping waist-coats of the last century. We say with Holmes 'I know it is a sin For me to sit and grin At thein there; Iut the old three-cornered hat, And the breeches, and all that, Are so queer. A ConRKcTiox. In naming a few of the members of the conspirators League in this city, hwt week, we spelled the name of Thos. Wray without a W.we make the omission this week, and presume more definite particulars art BDtpeceatar.
Juvenile Thieves.
Last week a large quantity of copper pipe was offered for sale to Tho' 3 W. Smith by some boys. He at once mistrusted they had came dishonestly by it, and on some pretext declined paying for it until Monday, but retained the pipe in his possession. He at once instituted inquiries, and Mr. Spitzfadden was induced to visit his distillery just East of town (now closed), when he discovered that some twenty odd fect of copper pipehad been cot off, and readily identified that in possession of Mr. Smith as his property. Mr. Darns, owning the brick shop on Jackson Street also discovered that some twenty or thirty feet of lead pipe had been abstracted from his premises, and we believe investigation proved by the same parties. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of most of the depredators, but respect for the feelings of parents and friends constrains us to withhold the names of the parties implicated. The recklessness and growing impudence of a portion of the juvenile population of this city has long been a matter of observation to all and of serious alarm to many. It is not unusual to see boys, frequently as young as ten or twelve yesus, on the streets at a late hour of the night, lruquenting the vilest haunts, smoking cigars, and indulging in tho corsest and most revolting profanity. It has not been inaptly remarked that the streets of a city or town, especially at night, is the great primary school to the penitentiary. It is tin; parents or guardians fault that their children be on the streets at unreasonable hours it is their duty to see that they arc at home at a proper hour, and also that they conduct themselves with proper propriety on all occasions. We believe it is held by many that excessive corporal punishment never effects a reformation, but unfrequently does more hurt tlian good, disgraces the child in its own estimation, and creates a wilful and rebellious disposition. There are but few children !nt what cr.n be easier coaxed than driven, and it is the duty of parents to enJeavor to incul.-ate. into the minds of their children the necessity and advantages of correct deportment We have also frequently thought that school teachers neglected this one m st essential branch of education. A short lecture each day on this subject would gradually instill it into the minds of their scholars, and we arequite confident that under this system of tuition the boisterousness and not unfrequently rudeness that is daily witnessed in. our streets would gradually disappear. We would also recommend to the youth that they endeavour on their '"own hook," as they would term it, to observe and practice :t gentlemanly deportment they will be surprised to see how easy the accomplishment is aequiml, how much more they will respect themselves and how much more they will be respected by others, espjcially their senioiirs.
