s.,i4 o a -A. xi - NOTICE TO ADVERTISERS TVaTolunnteerli the om.t rr published In hlby air- naaa largaand penr.anmt circulation, offering sua trior advantagw to advertisers. The Meeting on Tuesday. There waa a meeting, called Ir the friends of the administration, held in this ity on Tueadaj last. The day was most atlipicions, the sun sending down its most . gcoial rays, rendering the air at nee salubrious. and balmy, hat un ler foot it was not quite so inviting, reminding on of the mussy sewer of filth and corruption through which the manager. and endorsers of tho meeting were floundering. The attendance was qnito respectable as to numbers and individual, for quite one half of the crowd were Democrats, and passable order was preserved, thsre beiag about the usual number of drunks and "fights for an assemblage of the size. The meeting organized in the Court House at 10 o'clock in tho morning by the appointment of T. A. McFarland, President, Dr. D. A. Adams and John C. Green, Secretaries. A set of cut and dried resolutions were then reported and read, partaking very strongly of the epread eagle style, equivalent to saying they were pointless and meaningless; most assurdly they ignore every vital measure in which the people are most deeply interested. If wc should come across a copy of the resolutions we will jjire them an airing in our columns. The audience was then addressed by Col. Dick Ryan, who started out by staggering the creduality of his hearers by the assertion that he had not come there to make a partizan spacch, was a Donglas Democrat, for the "Union unconditionally," etc.. that this war was for 'Liberty,' but failed to define who it was proposed should enjoy this boon, but as white men are, or rather were free, it is a reasonable supposition that it is the negro for whose Liberty we are fighting. At the conclusion of Dick'a speech the meeting adjourned until 2 o'clock. At one oVlock, Gov. Morton, having in charge hi chattel, Ex-Gov. Wright, and both protected by a military escort, arrired from Indianapolis, and soon after repaired to the Court Hcuse. Wc did not hear tha speakers, but hear the effort of G v. Morton spoken of as able and passably conservative, leaving his chattel, the Ex-Governor, to do the low corned r. We dil not learn that any of the Speakers denounced or refered to the astounding corruptions being practiced iu every brauch of the government, felt any other sympathy for the sufferings and privations of the soldier, than thoe naturally dieted by scheming political aspirants they were for war until the last man and the latt dollar was exhausted, but none of them will ever offer their cowardly carcasses as a target for rebel bullets. Those Arrests. Wa last week briefly announced that Win. Trees, John Baker, Jackson Baker, and Wm. Hill, of Liberty Townthip, this county has been arrested by a deputy U. S. Marshal. We understand that the officer ares armed with a warrant as well as a revolver, issued on iuformation by one Brown, at present under sentence at Indianapolis for treasonable conduct. Brown formerly resided in Liberty Town ship, is a man of no character and we un derstand his jailor avers that he is will ing to make oath that he (Brown) is de ranged. The charges against the persons named we believe is conspiracy and en couraging soldiers to desert. d They were taken to Indianapolis on Thursday, but released the following day on $1500 bail each. The officer and his squad making the arrest behaved in a most cowardly aud shameful manner. Instead of going directly to these men in the day time and exhibiting his authority, he skulked around the neighborhood uutil after midnight, when the houses of these men were surrounded by the gang, the doors beaten down and they 'dragged out of bed and compelled to walk-through the mud and aluah to this city, a distance of six miles, and ejected to numerous insults and inconveniences. There is no evidence to sustain the c'large pre fe red against the parties, and it is questionable if they will ever be broojht to trial. Wt trill here just pay that the next time any of the minions of abolitionim hare any warrants to serve in this county theyjwill find it much morejeonyenient to do it ia the day time, nor will a possee be needed, to enforce any legal measure. Let every Democrat in tha coun t y calcrr for lH 'iVitrstiitE.".
The Conscript Bill Passed. Yesterday the House of Representatives passed the Senate Conscript Bill, with a few amendments, which will require that it be returned to that body for concurrence. We have only room to say that it is more sweeping in its provisions than any similar law in Europe. It is reported that the President intends immediately issuing a requisition for six or eight hundred thousand men under this law, for a term of three years, or during the war.
Removal. Dan Morgan has removed his Barber Shop to the room formerly occupied by Mike Po, East end Kay House, where he will always be found on hand to ply the tmsoriftl art in all its various branches, in a skillful and practical manner, such as shaving, hair dressing, shampooing, Ac. lie will alo rejuvinate the appearance of masculine humanity whose raTen locks have been nipped by that remorseless thief, old Time, and restore thein to their original color, fde will al?o, on short notice and for a slight pecuniary consideration, transform red whiskers aud sun burned mustaches to a jetty black, thereby greatly eubaucing the prospects of ihe possemor in thj matrimonial market. Artuir's National Magazine. TIn8p;cm of the monthlies for March is on our table, ahounding with illustration, fashion plates, designs for embroidery, crotchet work, &c. Its pages are also stored with tho choicest literary productions from the pen of its talented editors, T. S. Arthtr, and Virginia F. TWxsend. Published by T. S. Arthur, Phiadelphia, Pa. Terms $3 a year. Court Postponed The March Term of the Common Pleas Court for this county will not convene until the second Tuesday in March. " National Claim Agency. Attention is invited to the card of Ben. F. Davis, National Claim Agency, in another column. Those having business of this description to transact will find Mr. D. a prom it and reliable Agent. (Bf Cooky's Lady's Book for Match is received. Tho announcement ia a guarantee of its superior excllence and universal atTactions. BSb, There was another heavy fall of snow on Saturday last, accompanied by extreme cold. Weather wise acres predict that it will be the last heavy fall of snow this season. Teachers Meeting. In pcrsuant to notice published in the Voixnteer, a large and i-espectable collection of the teachers of Shelby County, met in the Court House, and unanimously passed the followiii? resolutions. Resolved, That Ave, the School teaebers of Sheiby County in convention as?emhled, here by pledge ourselves, and request the coopera tion of all other teachers in the County to that end, to use all honorable moans on an d before the coining Aprile election, to secure tlie election of such Trustees, in our respec tive Townships, as will show some liberality in the employment of Teachers, and the ex penditure ot the public bohool revonue. Jtesolced, I hat we hereby enter ou r protest against what we consider the illegal and illiberal action of many of tho Trustees itiour County, in the employment of teachers, in as much as they have attempted to force all the Teachers within their Townships to labor for the same price per day, without regard to the number ofpupile to br taught, or the qualilications of the teacher, or the good or bail character of the destrict, while we understand from the reading of the 10th section, of tho Common Jschol law, that tho Legislature evidently contemplated diversity in the prices to be paid for teaching our bchools an equal number of days. And Whereas, we ar receivinc fcr our labor a currency, worth in (Jold about thirty eight cents to the dollar, aud nearly every article of food or clothing which we have to buy either costs the Gold in a foreign market or will bring the Uold when shiped to a for pign market, and is therefore worth as much more than it was in former times, ns the gold is worth more than this currency which we receive for our labor. Jiesolved, That any premium upon cold, should be added to the wages of the Teacher, to enable him to live as formerly, and to sustain himself under the advanced prices, brought about by the pressure of the times. Itexotred, That these resolutious be pub bsh?d in the Shelby Volitxteer, And the meeting adjourned to meet at the Court House iu shelbyville on Saturday the 23th day of .March lsOo, at 1 o clock f., Jl., and request all ot the bchool teachers of bnelby County to be present on that occasion and participate in tne deliberation 01 me meeting. r 1ST OF I.KTTl.llJi rrnnrinip? in the Tnjt Office iJ at Shcl'ivville, Ind., uncalled for, on the 15th day f -oruary, liS. ; "Persons railing for these letters will p:ejesaj- av!vertiscd,or they ill uc tle looked for.
