We are not ap . prised as to tha charges against them, nor whether they had any process fur their arrest. j?r W. II. Talp.-tt, the newly elected President of the Sinking Fund, entertained his political and immediate personal friends with a splendid ovation at Military Hall, Indianapolis, on Thursday evening lmt. The atVair was brilliant "and agreeable, and passed otV as merry as a "marriage bell." Mr. Tallott never does things by halves. Assailt and IUkkiamsm. Ou Monday night last Capt. Mctiuire was assaulted by I.ushious Stevens, and received several piite SfTtre contusions on the face and head by n pair of false knueks. The assault was. entirely unexpected by the Capt, and without just cause or pretext. Stevens was arraigned If fore the Mayor on Tuesday, lined $1") and costs, and sentenced to undergo ten davs imprisonment, hut appealed the ease to a higher Court and gave bail fur his appear, ance. While the Mayor was engaged in filling np the" bond two stones were throw n through tha window by some ruttian or ruffians out nT doors, barely missing tho bead of the Mayor. We are apprehensive that rufiinniam is not entirely eradicated in Shelby ville. Urmotat.. Thus. W. Smith has removed his stock of Stovws, etc., to the room formerly occupied by Jas. K. LIutual Insurance. We would call the attention of our readers to the carl of the Indiana Firs Insurance Compant which will be found in our columns this week. The principle of Mutual Insurance we hold to be the principle upon which insurance should be made upon farmers prop" erty. What is aimed at, is to secure the safest insurance at the lowest rates. Insurance it indemnity against loss of certaiu stipulated property. The person insured pay to the party insuring, a certain rate percent called a premium, this rate being graduated nccorJin to the hazard of the risk. In a Stock Company this rate is payable wholly in cah, an 1 is necessarily made sufficiently hish to cover not only the ordinary incidental expenses uftho company, but t
Furni-!i a. anrnlusa fnriil l;tt"( pnnm-h turnout jalldctuanhthitmav h made upon it for losses. If the company is prosperous, the tockhol lers pocket a hand3om dividend as is usually the ease with well conducted Stock Companies. Hence the person who takes out a polior, pay not only fur insurance, but pay a pro Hit to capitalist who are the slock, holders in the company, and yet he gets no better, no safer insurace. On the contrary, he is not so sure of irool insurance as he is in a well managed Mutual Insurance Company when his neighbour arc among las insurersThe mutual system is based on the idea th : no one shall pa' anything more than j .st enough to meet expenses nnd pay the l;os. No pr fits to stockholders are to be naid. What in a Stock Companr iroes into I a n - - - t ie ' profit ' drawers, in a Mutual Company remains in the pockets of the policy holders where it justly belongs. Any well regulated Mutual Insurance Company can insure for a less rate than a Stock Company taking a period of years. For instance, the Farmer Mutual Insurance Company of Vermont, say in their 10th annual report, that it has cost them .r." cents to insure a $100 for live years, -while the best Stock Companies charge o) cents for a $100 for one year. There are other Mutual Companies in Conn., Mass., Mio-h., Wis., Perm., and Illinois that can make nearly ns good showing a the one refered to. Farmers of Shelby County, you will sec that we have a good first class Mutual InMiranee Company located hi this State, w hich has been in operation about nine months, and has not had o.ie dollar of loss yet. having issued about olW policies and insuring property to the amount of between four ami five hundred thousand dollars. Those f irmrrs who have been solicited to i isure in this company ned hare no foar in regard to its responsibility, for we see bv tlieir references they con e amply indorsed. Some of the best business men in the State are connected with it and we will close by giving an extract f o u the Indianapolis State Sentinrl who voi clies for tho Company and its olfieers in a way that cannot bo missu understood. We take pleasure in noticing the "Indiana Fre Insurancee Contdany," of this City. This Company is organized under the general law of the State, and intends to insure only on first class farm dwellings, barns, churches, s diool houses, and other detached buillsnsis and their contents The Company's Office is No. o O ld Fellows' Hall. Our.late worthy State Treasurer, Hon. J. S. Harvey, is the President ; Wm. C. Lnpton, Vice President; Frederick IJaggs, Treasurer; W. T. tiibson, Secretary of the Company good, first rate men, ail of ihem. Mr. tiibson is nn old experienced underwriter, and we think him just the right man fi.r tho place, and we would recommend the Company to the farmers and business men of the State. Daily Sen tinel.
