In consequence of impaired and failing health he has been compelled to rewijrn his commission. f Capt John NV Scott arrived home on Saturday evening, lie is wounded in the left nrm, near the shoulder. The bone is badly shattered, but quite, panuine hopes tire entertained that amputation trill not have to be resorted to. During the trip from Nash- , Tine, on the Cumberland river, the bout on -nvhieh he took passage was captured by the rebels, together with four others, mostly loaded with wounded soldiers, four of which were burned and the other permitted to pro ceed with the wounded to Louisville. Capt. . Scott was paroled. His father-in-law, Mr. fiorgas, who was in company with him, was permitted to papa without molestation, although a rebel took a fancy to his carpet a icliel and evinced a strong inclination to , confiscate it, but was finally prevailed upon to give it up. tSy The following is a list of the mem- ' hers of Capt. The tions therein made are worthy of consideration, and should bo promptly adopted by the masses throughout the State. The time has come when the people must be;jin to think and act for themselves if they would preserve their rights and liberties. Rkvival. A revival hat been in progress In the Methodist Church in this city for the pa?t two weeks. We learn that thus far the result has been quite satisfactory, lvev. Mr. Lvxcn, the pastor of the Church, is an eloquent and impressive speaker, expounding the Divine law in a manner well calculated to elicit the attention and respect of the most skeptical, and evincing great research and scholaristic attainments. It strikes us tha discorses of this nature must leave a more in dellible impression upon tha mind of the new f-.onvert than those stentorian exhibition of lnns, in too common use on similar occa sions, which excite the temporary fears of the young, but leave no lasting impression. DEMOCRATS AROUSE I GRAND RALLY!
There will be a Grand Rally of tte Democracy and conservative citizens of . J in! Shelby county at the Court House Shelby ville, on Thursday, February 5th, 185i, at 10 o'clock in the forenoon, to express their satisfaction and approval of the action of the Legislature in itscHoise of Hon. THOS. A. HENDRICKS for the United States Senate, and to express their disapproval of the course of the present administration in Washington in perverting the war from its avowed object, the restoration of the Union, into an abolition crusade for the abolition of negro slavery, and its shameless attempt to put this degraded race on an equality with the white soldier and citizen. Let there be a General Rally of the ever loyal Democracy, worthy of the occasion. The meeting will be addressed by Hon. Thos. A. Hendricks and other eminent speakers from abroad. New Years Day with the Negroes and Abolitionists at Beaufort. The New York Tribune oftheCthiust contains a long account of tha negro jollification at Beaufort, X. C. under the immediate su. pvrintendanee and patronage of the abolition Government agents, ou Now Year's day, from which we clip the following extract: "In accordance with ait order from Gen. Saxtou, entitled "A Happy New Year's Greeting to tUe Colore! L'eopie in the Department of the South," thi steamers Flora and loton, laden with a heavy freight of dusky humanity, arrived opposite the landing at Smith's, Beaufort, South Carolina, at noon on Thursday, the lt inst. As soon as the landing was made a procession was formed, and, with the band of the th Maine Volunteers at its head, marched to the spacious live-oak grove in the rear of tho plantation mansion' Here a stand was erected, on which were seated General Saxton, Chaplain French, Colonel Higginson, Collector Severance, Dr. Brisbane, Dr. Feck, and numerous other prominent personages. Theceremonies were opened with prayer by the Kev. Mr Fowler, Chaplain of the 1st South Carolina Vols. Negroes, after which an original ode, com posed for the occasion by Frof. Zachos ol Antioch College Ohio, was sung. Thcproc tarnation of the 1'resident anil lien. Saxton' s address were next real. A set of colors, the gilt of the Kev. Dr. Cheever's church in New York city, was then presented to the Negro regiment by the Kev. Mr. French. Col. Higginson receiving the Hags in behalf of the regiment, and calling upon Sergeant Rivers ami Corporal Sutton, to whose care he intrusted them, (or speeches. They were civen with great animation, and were received with tumultuous applause. Speeches were also made by Gen. Saxton, Mrs. Frances I). Gage of Ohio, and others, and the crowd then adjourned to the eating ground, where a barbecue, consisting of twelve roasted oxen, and numerous bairels of molasses and water, was so;n disposed of. White soldiers were of course exclude! from par akingofthe feast provided they were not good enough to participate with negroes and abo itionists. What do the soldiers fam ilies in the free States, who are suffering for the actual necessities of life, think of the gov eminent feeding and clothing one hundred thousand vagrant negroes, and feasting them with roast oxen on New Years ? AxomER C.vcse. We have all along been assured bv the abolitionists that slavery was the cause of the war that if there had been no slavery there would have been no rebel lion, and consequently no war, but this, by theirown confessions is all a myth. During the discussion in the United States Senate the other day on the West Point Military School appropriationbill, Den. Wade, of Ohio, the same abolitionist who asserted that the man who quotes the Constitution is a traitor, asserted that West Point was "a hot bed of traitors if there had been no West Point there would have been no rebellion." Here we have it not slavery but West Point caused the rebellion, according to the abolition apostle Ben Wade. Old Abe h? therefore on the wrong track, and will have to revoke his negro emancipation proclamation, and issue another abolishing v est Point. B. A prominent clerzyman relates that he was present at a meeting of the Baptist denomination held in Rockford a few aays since, tvhen Elder Knapp was called upon to lead in prayer. That eccentric but eouni individual of course complied, and among other petitions to the Throne of Grace, offered the following: "O Lord God, save us from the Devil ! O Lord God, save us from the Sccesh! O Lord God Almighty sayeus from the Democrat !" "Amen, amen, resounded all over the house, and for a moment t'ae endorsement came so strong as to prevent the Elder from concluding tho prayer. Abolition paper. It is not surprising ho should pray to be saved from the devil, from the Seccsh, and from the hands of hnnest and lavr abiding men.
