The negro, noticed by us last week

as having been arrested for an attempted riolation of the person of a white woman, had an examination before Esquire Brown on Thursday and was committed to jail to await hit trial for the offence at the next term of the criminal Court The facts as disclosed by the evidence of the prosecuting witness, Mrs. Kimberlin, are: About 10 o'clock Wed nsday night a person knocked at her door and demanded admission, and ort beinz refined bur!t in the door and at onCe caught her, she having gone to the door, fche ntruled to rej lease herself and called loudly for assistance, and finally manaced to got out of doors, when he person released her and fled. During the scuffle ehe ascertained by thrusting her htfnd into his hair that her'assailant was a negro'. Suspicion at once fastened upon Morgan (John, not Dan, the barber) and those w ho came to her relief at once hunted up the prop er officers, procured a process and arrested him. We understand the negro does not deny the commission of the crime, but attempts to palliate it by saying he mistook the house. He has been considered "a mean nigger," and was once before prouecuted in this city for ! the commission of an outrage on decency. On his advent from the Justices ofiicc a feeble demonstration was made by a few of the by slanders to take him from the hands of the officer. E. 11. Amsden and S. L. Vanpelt, who had been deputised by officer Cross to assist him. stood their ground in vindication ofthe law and retained the prisoner in its cu.toda v it is more than probable he would ' have escaped entirely ha 1 t!i;y relinquished j their hold of him.
