.AGRICULTURAL.
Insects end Diseases of tho "Wheat Agriculturest Crop. Ca nadiax TU says :, In the year 183G the Bureau of Agriculture and Statistics of Upper Canada offered a prize of 10 for the best essay on the origin, nature and habits, and the history of tho progress, from time to time, and the cause of the progress, of the weavil, Hessian flv, wheakmUige, and other such insects as bave made ravage on thei wheat crop3 in Canada, and on such disease as the wheat crops have been subjected to, and on! the best means of evading or: guarding against them. ! The prize was awarded to II. Y. Hind, Esq., M. A., Professor of Chemistry at Trinitv college, Toronto. He first gives a history j of the insect tribes which infest wheat, stating that those varietie3 of wheat which have strong, j flinty stalks, suffer less injur" j from inlets than others of a more tender nature, and that vigorous growth and abundant tillering or, in other words high farming, enables the plant to sustain the attacks of this enemy, and maintain its healthy condition. The Agriculturist adds : The means proposed by Mr. Hind for arresting the progress of this insect are, first, good husbandry, which implies abundance of manure, deep plowing, careful weeding, and a systematic rotation of crops, methods, such as grazing or feeding off the wheat, rolling and mowing, bv which the autumnal broods of the insects arc destroyed, and the spring broods prevented from hatching, are practiced ; but until the system of over-crpping and scourging the land is gi'en up in the States, and a more generous course of husbandry substituted, the American farmers must make their account to be subject, from time to time, to the re-appearance and depredations of these pests, which are in fact, in a great measure, the results of their own slovenly and inefficient modes of culThe Hoses of Norway. Laing, in his travels in Norway, says that horses in tlit-country have a very sensible way of tak ing their food. Instead of swil ling themselves with a pailful of water at a daught no doubt from the fear of not getting any again, and then oversrorfrinj? themselves for like reason; they have a buck-1 et of waterput down beside their allowance of hay. It is amusing to see with what relish tliey take a sip of the one, and a mouthful of the other, alternately, sometimes only moistening their mouths, as a rational being would do, while eating a dinner of such dry food. A broken winded horse is scarcely ever seen in Norway. Uolic ix horses. iv. corres pondent of the Farmer and jdanter writes: "One pint of salt dissolved in warm water will cure a horse of colic. 1 have tried it twenty years without a failure." Another remedy mentioned by a correspondent of the 3orth-ices-fern Farmer is the following: "Take a bc&quilt, wet it thoroughly in cold water, wrap it around the horse, and as it gets hot poor on cold water. I have known the lives of horses saved in this way, when the veterinary surgeon said they could not live manv minutes, ana in inteen or twenty minutes they would be up and eating, and sure to get well." Ohio Valley Farmer. The Borer. Mr. Travis, of jNatick, iilass., states that a mix ture of one part salt, two parts fresh slacked Zime, and two parts of soft soap, applied to the lower limbs and the body of and appletree, alter nrst scraping the tree gently wil prevent the borer from depositing its eggs m the bark. It should be applied about the middle of April. He states that the sueecs of this remedy is com plete.
Sowing Smutty Wheat.
The grain-gower suouiu no more expect to raise grain of superior excellence from poor or diseased seed, than the stock-grower animals possessing fine points and perfect symmetry from ill-favored and inferior stock. Smut 13 but vegetable, a plant, parasite, fungi, or mistletoe, just as easily propagated as wheat, and thrives in soii prepared for wheat, and is ready attach itself to and destroy the wheat crop as it advances toward maturity. Smut not only appropriates the entire of the the kernel, but at taches itself to the surface of the same, as well as the straw, without apparent injury to it; so that though seed may appear wholly sound, free from smut and vegetate freely, yet if examined by a microscope will have a surface more or les3 affected by smut. To destroy the vitality of this vegetable fungi before sowing the wheat becomes an important matter with the grain-grower. An almost certain remedy or preventive has been discovered. It consists in soaking the seed-wheat in a solution of blue vitriol in water, and afterward drying, by rolling or dusting it in air-slacked lime or drv ashes, before sowing. This is a simple and most effectual remedy, and should be adopted by every one whose wheat crop is likely to suffer from this infection. Nothing shows the refinement of the farmer more than the adorning of his home ; it shows his i?ood taste and that he is desirous of making all around him pleasant and comfortable. Beautiful and attractive homes tend to increase all the good qualities of the occupants, and remove the bad. Beauty and loveliness in nature tend to all that is noble in thought and deed, and make mankind better, both as concerns their own happiness and that of others. Haying shown why farmers should adorn their homes, I will tell how to do it the easiest : If your house is poor and 2lain, it makes no difference ; if you can not afford to build a-new one, adorn the surrounding of the old one. In odd spells i build a new yard it will cost almost nothing; setout some pretty trees in front, a nd surround the house with them if possible. Fill the yard with flowers; they will cost nothing but the trouble of getting, unless rare varieties are procured, and your wire and children will tend to the cultivation, never fear that. Build a wood-house if you have not one already. ...Don't deface your door yard with wood-piles, old rails) sleds, cart-wheels, and other rubbish; remove the hog-pen from its conspicuous position near the roadside to the rear of the house, and build a neat frame structure instead of sticks and slabs 'twill pay for itself in a few years. Have good, neat fences, they look and are much better. Remove ell sticks, stones and stumps from the fields. Build good barns and sheds, if not already built ; they will pay for themselves, and V ok better than the unsightly. II vve good yards around your i.rm buildings. And above all, have the best books of the day, where yourself and family can gain instruction in their leisure hours, and take at least one good agricultual paper. Quantity of Blood in a Horse. If we assume the weight of a horse to be 12 cwt, says the American Veterinary Journal, the whole quantity of blood will amount to 84 quarts, or 158 pounds, of which about 4o quarts, or 90 pounds, will flow from the juguar vein previous to death ; although the loss of much smafler quantity will sometimes deprive the animal of life. Scientific American. Immense Siieep Movemfnt. The Santa Fe (N. 3d.) Gazettes, states that 105,000 sheep are about to be taken from Bemaillo and Talentia counties, in that Territory, overland to California. There is also a drove of 10,000 from Ohio, now at Santa Fe, bound for the same destination.
