Eagle Creek Regulated
Anyone sitting on the banks of placid Eagle Creek would hardly realize how closely the stream’s pulse is monitored. The Stream Pollution Control Board; the Water Division and the Division of Fish and Game of foe Indiana Department of Natural Resources; The Marion County Flood Control Board of the Department of Public Works; foe Department of Metropolitan Development; the Marion County Board of Health; foe Sheriff’s Department, and foe VJS. Army Corps of Engineers all have an eye on Eagle Creek. The Stream Pollution and Water Division agencies are perhaps foe most powerful but officials from all departments cooperate in the struggle to keep Eagle Creek healthy and natural. One of foe layman’s first concerns about Eagle Creek is pollution. A prognosis from Robert Carter of foe Indiana Stream Pollution Control Board is good. "Eagle Creek is bacteriologically good; pollution levels are

generally not all that great; and foe water quality going into foe reservoir is good,”he said. Carter led an intensive water quality study of Eagle Creek in 1970 which was repeated again last year. The pollution men looked at general waste levels, fecal counts, dissolved oxygen ratios, bio - chemical oxygen demand, phosphates, ammonia, nitrates, and even took Eagle Creek’s temperatore. The survey covered foe entire Eagle Creek watershed. "Our main purpose in foe survey was in relation to foe feedlot at Sheridan,” Carter explained, "we wanted to get a ‘before’ picture so we could evaluate the ‘after’ picture.” Carter said his agency com ducts regular inspections of foe feedlot’s effect on Eagle
Creek and, so far, has turned up nothing detrimental to foe stream’s water quality. Carter mentioned Eagle Creek showed up somewhat low in dissolved oxygen counts through foe whole length of the water(Continued to page 7)
