Sgt. M.D. Ellis Reports

That it is fiction: Decreasing tire pressure does not increase traction. The only increase is in tire wear due to soft side walls and cuffed treads. One of toe most serious mistakes drivers make is to fail to recognize toe limitations that bad weather conditions place on driving and vehicle control abilities. An example, “there are drivers who equip toe rear wheels of toeir car with traction aids, such as snow tires and tire chains, they then go out and try to drive as they would on dry pavement.’’With toe front wheels “unaided” they are going to skid cm a turn. The driver has lost his steering ability, and he realizes too late he cannot control his car even though he has plenty of driving traction through the rear wheels. This loss of steering control problem isn’t confined to snow or ice slick roads, wet pavement brings about a problem known as hydroplaining. Hydroplaining is toe tendency of a cars tires to “ride up,” to “float” on a layer where water covers toe road. The tires actually lose contact with toe pavement. Just when hydro-

plaining occurs depends on toe speed, toe amount of water, toe tires, tire pressures, toe weight of toe vehicle, and how toe vehicle is loaded. It usually effects toe front wheels. Steering is lost before toe driver realizes it, until he tries to turn and cannot. The trick is to slow down to let toe tires brake through toe film and grab toe pavement once again. Good tire treads are of course essential.

Rain or winter slick roads demand different driving habits. The counter measures are as follows: Anticipate changing road conditions; think ahead to shaded or wind swept areas where ice forms first and melts last; slow down when road surfaces are anything less than ideal; plan each maneuver in advance to avoid sudden changes in either speed or direction: (Continued to page 8)
