Saturday Fire Damages Home Of Harrison Blind

Speedway firemen work to extinguish the fire in a dresser taken Saturday noon from the Harrison Blind home at 1705 DeSoto Lane. Fire Saturday noon at 1705 DeSoto Lane caused damage estimated by Fire Chief Ed Sowell at roughly SISOO. This figure was for actual fire damage; the total figure, Sowell said, will go much higher, including smoke and heat damage and foe cost of clean-up. damage occurred throughout foe house. The first call to the Fire Department came at about 11:30 a.m., according to Capt. Ed Lucas, shift captain, who answered foe call although on his day off. Lucas, who were off-duty; four volunteers; two Wayne Township volunteers who were in the vicinity, and one Indianapolis fireman, who lives across foe street. As best could be determined, Capt. A total of 1,726 cans have been donated, most of which have come from the sophomore class. Speedway won both the varsity and reserve games with Greenwood in foe Sparkplugs’ gym last weekend. The varsity score was 66-58 and the reserve score, 44-33. Other basketball scores last week included: Speedway freshmen 43,Zionsville 38; Speedway eighth grade 29, Craig 28; Speedway seventh grade 36, Craig 27. Speedway’s swim team placed third among eight schools competing in foe Marion County, meet last Saturday. In an earlier swim meet Speedway won over Decatur Centra] by a score of 65-30. Speedway’s wrestling squad won all three of its meets in

foe four-team tournament at Greenwood last week. Scores were Speedway 36, Plainfield 21; Speedway 32, Greenwood 23; Speedway 36, Brownsburg 16. Results of otter meets held recently are; Danville varsity 32, Speedway 19; Speedway reserves 31, Danville 15.

Coin Boxes Are Robbed

Coin boxes for Indianapolis Star-News stands were broken into Saturday night, according to foe Speedway Police Department. Shortly before 2 a.m., Officer William Rime, on patrol, noticed a damaged stand, and investigated. Stands in the Main Street area, from Tenth to Sixteenth Street, were involved, with foe entire stand near foe gates of Allison on Tenth being taken. Total cash loss was about $lO, but total value involved was about SIOO, because of damage to foe stands. No arrests have been made at sols time. Officer Jim Lekse assisted Rupe in the Investigation. At about 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 11, two white males were observed trying to enter Dottie’s Grill, 1002 Main Street James Kolberlin, manager of foe adjacent car-wash, saw foe two men with a crowbar and alerted a nearby police car, on an emergency run.
