Pants suits are the No. 1 fashion look in Speedway this Fall, (ah, sweet comfort!) Of course, slacks have long been popular for casual everyday wear, but the new stylish pants suits currently on the market have enabled women to dress both smartly and comfortably for virtually all occasions. Pants suits have appeared recently at P.T.A. meetings, the High School Chili Supper and even at Clowes Hall (the Air Force Band Concerts A St. Gabriel dance held a few weeks ago at the K. of C. Hall revealed many flared leg pants worn with tunic tops. The pants outfits worn for evening are usually soft and flowing, affording the wearer an attractively feminine silhouette. Dave Cerneck, the Sales Merchandise Manager of J. C. Penney Speedway, reports pants suits are popular with all ages. Although difficult to keep in stock, due to the great demand, Penney’s now has a good selection in sizes ranging “all the way up to 16”. (Wboop-e-doo! Come on fellow dieters, let’s keep with it. Those Indianapolis ‘stout* shops are a long drive away.) Also becoming popular on the local fashion scene are the one-piece jump suits. To the new midi length the Speedway women have collectively and loudly said... “ICKI” In fact, the midi has been so poorly received here, Mr. Cerneck has ordered most of Penney’s midi stock sent to the Alteration Department to be shortened to knee length. The remaining midi’s, which include goucho skirts, are on sale at reduced prices. So if we want to change our minds, now is the time to make a good buy. In contrast, however, the acceptance of the Maxi coat has been very good. Although not much interest has been shown in fabrics such as the fake fiirs and crinkle patents, the heavy wool Maxi’s are selling well. The carmel colorations seem to be the most desired. To accessorise their pants suits, the gals are buying comfortable shoes with a block or slightly chunky heel, from 11/4 to 11/2 inches in height. These shoes are available in a sporty style with buckles or other metal trim and also in a more dressier version, with perhaps a leather bow. Bud Bowman, Manager of Shift’s Shoes, Speedway, reports that the “wet look*’ is the big favorite for both shoes and purses. This material, although extremely soft, is very durable. Mr. Bowman says that Wack and dark brown are

Attacks Anti-Labor

Terry Straub, Democratic candidate for Congress in Indiana’s Sixth District, today attacked the trend on Capitol Hill toward legislation that would seriously impair the rights of organized labor. In a statement from his campaign headquarters, Straub said: “The trend toward irresponsible, anti-Labor proposals displayed by the current Administration constitutes a real and shocking threat to the Labor movement as we know it in this country. Currently there are a dozen bills in the Senate which would seriously impair the rights of organized labor at all levels, from collective bargaining to community action.”

By John Dillon Reflectorised License Plates

By John J. Dillon, Attorney at Law Indiana, like many states, has a law requiring that license plates be provided with luminous material. The law requires that the Bureau of Motor Vehicles provide plates on which the identification numerals are treated with special reflective materials designed to increase the visibility and legibility of the license plates. It is not required that the background be specially treated but merely the letters and numerals. The

Indiana Legislature required that sufficient funds be withdrawn from the Motor Vehicle Highway Account to provide money paint, cover or treat all license plates with luminescent or reflectorizing paint or material. When laws of this nature were originally passed in the various states, there were some complaints that it was special legislation that required a product which only one or two specialized manufacturers could provide. Since the wide adoption of this law requiring, reflectorized plates (Continued to page 11)

however, and the fact that the laws are very general in nature requiring only luminescent material, many manufacturers can now supply and competively bid upon the contracts that provide the material, this complaint is no longer heard. With the advance in the manufacture of luminescent materials, these license plates are capable of picking up light even when viewed at an angle, or when the license plates are wet. Many highway safety experts feel that these luminescent license plates have made a great contribution to highway safety. Manufacturers of reflectorized or luminescent materials used on license plates claim that fully reflectorized plates are visible when lighted by headlight on high beams from 2,000 feet, or nearly one-half a mile, and from 1,000 feet on low beams. Several highway safety testing laboratories have come up with statistical information which tends to prove this finding. A study
