Minority Speaks

Dear Editor: Last night I was one of the minority at the Speedway Town Hall who was “for” the granting of a variance to build a Fire Station in Meadowood Park area. I could not help but feel sorry for the rest of the attendees, my neighbors, in that they lost their bid to block the granting of the variance. I say this because I believe the remonstrators were sincere in their beliefs that this new Fire Station will be a thorn in their side. I am not blind to the nuisance value of a speeding-siren-blow-ing fire engine and the only

saving grace is the fact that this is a small inconvenience If It saves the life and property of one of us. I hope that in the years to follow, we will all benefit from the building of this new station and that the remonstrators may look back and honestly say, “Gee, I’m lucky that my attempt to block the placing of the new Fire Station failed.” I have one daughter attending Wheeler Elementary School and another one who will be attending in a few years. lam as concerned for their safety as any other parent. Nevertheless, I feel that with proper training,

the possibility that they will be hit by a fire engine responding to a call will be minimal. Last Memorial Day, a neighbor backed his car over my daughter's ankle after she had slipped while playing in the driveway. A freak accident that upset both of us but I rushed her to the nearest hospital as fast as I could. Being Memorial Day, I battled traffic blockages all the way. If this accident had affected her breathing, she would have been

Campbell Reappointed

Elmer M. Deckman, President of the Central Indiana Council, Boy Scouts of America announced that Stanley Campbell, Superintendent of the Indianapolis School System has been appointed chairman for the 1970 School Night to Join Scouting program. This is the second year Mr. Campbell has served in this capacity. School Night to Join Scouting will take place in Elementary Schools throughout the Council. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. September 24. Nationally a part of the Scouting philosophy says that like other organizations such as the church and the school, Scouting helps a boy to become a better citizen if his parents are interested and involved in what he is doing. For after all, fa-

Gas Company

A group of gas utilities, including Indiana Gas Company, petitioned the Public Service Commission of Indiana, today, to Include a “rate-tracking provision” as a part of existing rate schedules on file with the Commission. The new provision, if approved, would permit all Indiana gas utilities to flowthrough increases or reductions in the cost of gas pur-. chased from their pipeline suppliers by adjusting customer rates, just enough, to cover the changes. Such rate adjustments would be accomplished by an informational filing with the PSCI and formal rate proceeding would not be necessary. The petition indicates this tracking provision is needed because of the probability of future successive increases in the price of gas purchased from pipeline suppliers and the attritional effect such increases would have on the level of operating income and return authorized each petitioner by the PSCI. The cost of purchased gas constitutes approximately 50 percent of the annual operating expenses for the petitioning utilities. 'The Federal Tower'Commission has many proposals under consideration for improving gas supply which would Increase the price producers would sell natural gas to interstate pipeline companies. (The FPC regulates the rates of both the producers

Indiana Rail Seeks Long Distance Raise

Indiana Bell asked the State Public Service Commission today to increase rates on long distance calls within the state to offset larger toll revenue settlements with other telephone companies which help provide the service in Indiana. The proposal would add a nickel to station calls and a dime to person calls for the initial two-minute period and both increase and reduce charges for additional minutes of conversation. Under terms of a national agreement between the United States Independent Telephone Association and the Bell System, the additional revenue would go to 71 non-Bell companies operating in the state. David K. Easlick, Indiana Bell president said, ‘‘The addi-

dead by the time larrived at the hospital. With the prospective Fire Station in our immediate neighborhood, and the feet that our residential roads see very little main highway traffic, first aid is no more than minutes away and could meanthedlfference between life and death to one of us or our children. This is only one of the many good points we should not ignore. I have one request I would like the town board to consider.

mily solidarity is the foundation of our great nation. Therefore, on that special evening, parents are invited to accompany their boy to their neighborhood school. Due to the importance of School Night for Scouting the Central Indiana Council Public Relations Department has launched an extensive multi media publicity campaign to persuade more boys to go into Scouting and more parents to assume leadership roles. and pipeline companies.) Since the FPC has authorized tracking provisions for pipeline companies, any increases in gas costs to them would be tracked to their distribution utility customers. New demands for natural gas, accelerated by the recent emhasis on reducing air pollution, have been increasing faster than new gas reserves are being developed. IPs because of this serious gas supply situation that the FPC has been changing its regulatory approach. The new proposals under consideration which are designed to provide producers and pipeline companies with greater economic incentives to make the large capital expenditures required for sufficient exploration and drilling activity will mean Increased gas costs. The petitioning companies are - Central Indiana Gas Company; Hoosier Gas Corporation; Indiana Gas Company, Inc.; Kokomo Gas & Fuel Company; Northern Indiana Public Service Company; Richmond Gas Corporation; Southern Indiana Gas & Electric Company; Northern Indiana Fuel and Light Company, be.; Consumers Natural Gas Corp.; Lawrenceburg Gas Company; Linton Municipal Gas; and Jasonville Gas Utility. There are indications other Indiana gas utilities may enter into this cause later.

tional income to Indiana Bell merely would reimburse our company for the approximately $6,000,000 reduction in our revenues resulting from higher payments to the other companies.** On calls lasting more than two minutes, charges for each additional minute on station calls would be one cent more on messages covering short distances, unchaged on medium distances, and one, two or three cents less on longer distances. Overtime charges on person calls would be two or three cents more on short distances, one cent more on medium distances, and unchanged on longer distances. The request to PSC is a continuation of a case dating back to last December. In earlier proceedings, the commission authorized increases in intrastate long distance rates which became effective April 14, but left pending the matter of revenue settlements and their effect on toll rates. It is planned to put up traffic lights at various corners in accord with the Fire Station installation. Could we not avoid the usual ugly poles and lamps that are presently used? to keeping with the decor of the neighborhood, I would like to see more elegant models erected that would blend with the residential flavor. Perhaps with a little more effort, wo can sway the dissenters over to our side. After listening to Mr. Bruce Sherman, of the town board, detail the amount of work and planning this Fire Station site entailed, one can only respect and have gratitude that we have such a dedicated board to serve us.
