Letters To Editor
Town Opposes Feedlot
Editor's Note: The following Is a letter Oat all residents of die Town of Speedway should read. It was seat by the Speedway Town Board to the Indiana Stream Pollution Control Board. Gentlemen: For a number of reasons, which we will outline, the Town of Speedway wishes to state its opposition to the cattle feed lot station proposed to be developed in Boone County, Indiana. Our concern Is to the residents of Speedway whose primary source of water is Eagle Creek. Speedway's water treatment plant Is located on Eagle Creek and In 1969 Speedway entered into a 50 year contract with the Indianapolis Board Of Flood Control Commissioners to take three (3) million gaUons per day from die Eagle Creek Reservoir with an option to take another million gallons per day. Speedway's financial commitment tor this water could be as much as $24,000.00 per year. Speedway has delayed taking a firm position on this project because of uncertainty as to whether the possibility of pollutlon of the water In the Eagle Creek Reservoir from the proposed cattle feed lot was real. We have had some recent experience of our own which shows that poUutants entering into the reservoir Are not dissolved by a large body of water as the conditions are such that the pollutants travel directly from the Inlet of the reservoir across the dam and Into Eagle Creek from which we take our water at a down stream location.

Within the past month, Speedway’s wafer plant was seriously Taxed by Industrial pollutants which proceeded through the Eagle Creek Reservoir and over the dam without being substantially dissipated. This Is not one of those Issues that should be decided on the basis of probabilities. If there is even a possibility that bacteria or pollutants should enter the Eagle Creek Reservoir, the proposed cattle feed lot should not be approved. We are convinced on the basis of what we have read, from what unbiased experts have said and what our own experience has been that this possibility of contamination and pollution is real. Speedway has contracted tor reliable water. If the proposed cattle feed lot should be permitted, the water from Eagle Creek Reservoir would not he reliable. Speedway must depend upon Eagle Crete: for a substantial portion of its water usage. The Indianapolis Flood Control District depends upon the Town of Speedway tor a substantial annual payment for this water. Thus, the residents of Speedway, the citizens of Ihdlanapoils and the community in general will be jeopardized If this cattle feed lot Is approved. Very truly yours, Town Board of Speedway Freeman D. teen employees. Sometimes on weekends they work both the first and second shifts. Most of their trade comes from local Speedway residents and Allison employees. JoAnne Includes oil painting and piano and organ music as her hobbles. Dorothy enjoys reading and hi-fi music. However, they both say their hobbles are neglected during the busy season. Store hours are 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. each day of the week. During the winter months they close at 10:00 p.m. Want something good to eat? Then stop In at Dairy Queen, 4980 W. 10th Street, for a real treat.

fieufetom IM To Be Widened Speedway soon will begin widening pert of Georgetown Roed pending Author negotiations with bordering property owners, according to members of he Town Board. Board members said that the road wHI be dosed withina week from 16th Street to McCray Street, an area of 6 to 8 blocks. The bridge over Dry Run Ditch also will be closed for construction, members said. The widening is being doik because traffic congestion in the area around the time of the 500-Mile Race is considered a safety hazard. The road is located along the wst grandstands of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
