The fifth annual Dutch Boy Golf Tournament was held two weeks ago at Fittsboro between the Park Board employees and the Speedway Painters who are comprised of Speedway teachers. This tournament began five years ago as sort of a joke when the painters challenged some of the park employees to a game of golf. Mr. Ernie Greenwell who sells paint to a

Peanut League playoffs are scheduled to begin Wednesday, July 22 at the Leonard Park. Drawings were made Monday before the regular game. In the first game on Wednesday the Bobcats coached hy Bill Nester will play the Yankees who are coached by Bob Patterson. In the second game the Mets coached by Rodney McNelly and Brad Mlley will meet the Cubs who are coached fay Jeff Bates. The two winners will meet on Monday, July 27 at 10 a jn. The winner will be acclaimed as Leonard Champion and will advance to meet the Meadow ood Champs later« This year we

Janes DeLapp Services Held Services for James F .DeLapp 55, 1659 North Allison Avenue, Speedway, were held on Monday July 20 at the Conkle Speedway Funeral Home, with burial in Riverside Cemetery at Spencer. He died Thursday, July 16 in Methodist Hospital. Mr. DeLapp former owner of DeLapp Car Sales at Speedway, was a sales counselor at Johnson Chevrolet, Inc. He was a member of Speedway Masonic Lodge. Of note- these hoys were part of the Jr. High team that won their Invitational Tournament at the end of last season, let’s hope that Mr. Frank Hamilton has much success with them as did Mr. Haug their Bth grade coach.
Bud Jones Named Flyer-Journal Editor
“Bud” Jones has been named editor of The Speedway FlyerJournal in an announcement by owner and publisher of the paper, James T. O’Neal, Jr. In the announcement, O’Neal stated that it was with “much pleasure” that he welcomed Jones to the staff of the paper and explained that Jones would handle all editorial matter of the paper as well as serve as business manager. Jones has been a resident of the Speedway area for the past five years. He and his wife, Susie, have three children, BUI, 14, Mark, 11, and Tammy, 7, and reside at 6233

The former reservist said that asa reserve policeman at one time himself, Lawler had fought to change the wearing of a patch which stated, “Auxiliary,” with Ms reasoning, according to Waggoner, based on the promise of avoiding unnecessary abuse for the reserve policemen. “Now, as a member of the Board of Commissioners, Lawler has completely reversed his thoughts and demands a patch wMch will again cause the reserves the problems he originally fought to prevent,” charged Lawler. Concerning Commissioner O’Neal, Waggoner stated: “O’Neal, another commissioner, and also Democratic candidate for sheriff, has made his views on any reserve police organization well known. In a return letter to O’Neal, Waggoner retracted and apologized for Ms statements concerning the commissioner stating: “You were mentioned in a short paragraph concerning tbe problems of the Speedway Police Reserves. If you are not in any way opposed to this or any other suchgroup, I hereby retract and apologize for the “inference.” ” The controversy over the reserve patch continues. The suspended reserve officers remain so and no known negotiations are presently underway to reconcile the situation.
Jones then went to work for Bookwalter Printing Company in Indianapolis as an engraving cameraman and specialized in color separations for children’s text books. Jones spent seven years with Bookwalter. For the last fourteen years Jones has served as Chief Photographer for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His best known photographic work is a result of his position with the Speedway. The picture is the start of the 500 mile race shot straight at the cars as they approached tee number one turn. Jones' hobbles Include guns, old cameras and auto racing.
