Group Rearranges Church

A nunrter of churches and church organizations in In* dlanapolis and the surrounding areas are being treated to some highly individualistic sound. In religious music by a quintet of women who enjoy experimenting In music. Although their “leader,” Mi s. Dewey Vawter, is a highly trained musician, the

other members of the “group” are women who choose misic as an outside interest. The women first began playing together when Mrs. Vawter was asked to present a program for the Women’s Society of Christian Service at the Zionsvllle Methodist Church. She chose as her subject one dear to her heart, new ideas in ch jrch music. To demonstrate some of these ideas, she asked friends to aelp her. Playing the relatively uncomplicated Instruments, the live women gave a program which was a hit with the district officers of WSCS who were guests at the meeting. These officers Invited the' “group” to play at the District Meeting of WSCS in Lebanon. Since then, they have made more than a dozen appearances at district wide meetings and at local churches. Mrs. Vawter has taken training in choir directing at Christian Theological Seminary, and is an accomplished pianist. She has a great love of new ideas in all fields of music. She will be starting in the fall to give music lessons to four and five year old children, a field of Instruction being explored by only one other piano teacher. Mrs. Glen Hulbert, another member of the group, is the wife of the minister of the Zionsvllle Methodist Church. She calls herself '‘just a housewife”; but she sings regularly in the church choir and plays the piano a bit. lfrs. John Morgan, of Speedway, Is secretary to Lhe Southeast District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church In Indiana. She is also a soloist In the choir of the Church of God at Glendale. Brownsburg Is another member of the group. She is a pianist and organist for her church. Mrs. Ronald Biggs sings in the church choir at Zionsvllle Methodist. She Is active In church work and is among those helping to reorganize the church’s Wesleyan Service Guild. Like most of the women she considers her principal Interest to be homemaking. Mrs. Vawter describes the music they produce with their instruments as “experimental.” “Wv feel one should have an open mind about new Ideas in worship in the church,” she explains. “We work with the feeling that all forms of music should be explored. We don’t feel a hymn should be necessarily be done as it has been for 100 years.” The reaction to their music Is a mixed one, they report. They find enthusiastic agreement, especially among the youth. Interestingly, they have also been very well received by several golden age groups for whom they have played. However, many people In the m tddle age group are left “turned off,” Mrs. Biggs reports. Whether they like the music or not, however, all are Interested In the. Instruments. These are for the most part, Carl Orff pieces, originated in Germany. Some of these include glockenspiels, xylophones, drums, a psaltery, recorders, cymbals, woodblock triangle, tambourine and hand drum. The woman accompany themselves on these Instruments and sing a variety of religious music. Their repertoire Includes a jazz rendition of the Lord’s Prayer, music by Pete Seegar, folk music, such as the African “Kum Ba Yah,” and “Michael, Row The Boat Ashore.” They also do ouite a bit of improvising, which Mrs. Vawter defines as, “taking a tune, such as a hymn, and putting your own musical Ideas Into It.” 500 Cities Copy Post Office Effort The pilot effort of five post offices, which included Indianapolis, by letter carriers to locate summer jobs for youths Is being expanded to approximately 500 additional cities according to Charles H. Boswell local Postmaster. During the Initial trial period, Indianapolis was able to document at least 30 summer Jobs and have reason to believe there are more as a result of their Inquiries and efforts.

Could anyone assist the Juator Gtrl Scouts (4-5 A 6 grade girls) from Friendship Corner attending resident camp at Dell wood this summer? We need bathing suits (all sizes), single sheets, blankets, shorts and a dire need for plastic cups and glasses.
