"Rubbish Dump" Notice to Speedway Residents: Big Eagle Corporation is continuing its petition to re-zone the gravel pit areas for SU-13 (a rubbish dump, or as the Big Eagle Corp, petition describes it a debris landfill). The final hearing is for Tuesday, Oct. 7, 6 p.m. in the City County Building before the Marion County Council. It may save you money to be there. Conceivably if the area is re-zoned to a landfill, the appraisal value of the property will rise. The Town of Speedway is attempting to purchase the “south 40 acres” for additional water wells for Speedway residents. (Water use in Speedway has doubled in the past two years and one well has become useless because of contamination). As a taxpayer you will have to pay more for the purchase of water yielding land if Big Eagle Corp, wins its petition for re-zoning Speedway’s potential water source to a rubbish dump. Debris dumped north of 21st St. will contaminate water obtained from Big Eagle Creek, the present water wells, and the new proposed wells south of 21st St. Big Eagle Corp, acknowledged at the Metropolitan Planning Commission hearing, Sept. 17, that after the landfill raises the area above flood plain they will ask for a re-zoning to permit a trailer court. Your presence as a remonstrater against the proposed re-zoning of the area west of Cunningham Rd., north and south of 21st St., as a SU-13 rubbish dump may save you money and help furnish you with potable tasty water. Bring your Speedway friends.
Fire Prevention Week Announced Fire killed over 1,000 people a month in this country last year, according to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimates. Nearly a third of these were children. More than $2.1 billion worth of property including homes and churches, stores and factories went up in smoke during 1969. The tragedy of these statistics, Fire Chief Ed. Sowell points out, is that the greatest part of this waste of lives and property is avoidable. If the simple rules of fire safety were observed at home and on the job, the record could be far different. Fire Prevention Week, which this year falls in the period October 5-11, re-emphasizes that fire hurts, that fighting fires is everyone’s job, during this week and throughout the year. The local observance of Fire Prevention Week will be sponsored by the Speedway Fire Department, Chief Ed. Sowell announces. Proclaimed by the President of the United States and the Gov-ernor-General of Canada, the week is internationally sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association.
