fifed Cross Campaign R. Kirby Whyte has been named chairman of the Indianapolis Area Red Cross September Volunteer Recruitment Campaign. The program includes recruitment of more than 250 new volunteers for Red Cross service programs. Mr. Whyte is a member of the Indianapolis Area Chapter Board of Directors and is Vice-President of the Indiana National Bank. Allison News Alliso Division of General Motors Corporation has announced the successful completion of the initial test run of its GMA 100 gas generator approximately two months ahead of schedule. All initial test objectives were achieved. The GMA 100 gas generator is an advanced technology demonstrator which will serve as the basic building block for a new generation of turbofan engines for the mid-1970 time period. The GMA 100 integrates highly advanced component technology and incorporates many unique features which provide the flexibility required for future “multimission” applications. This initial test is the result of intensive design and development effort jointly sponsored by Allison and the USAF Aero Propulsion Laboratory under the Advanced Turbine Engine Gas Generator Program.

Vehicle Inspection Isn't The Entire Answer, Says Huber “Vehicle inspection represents a great stride forward in Indiana’s continuing fight against traffic deaths, but the program isn’t the entire answer” Albert E. Huber, executive director of the Indiana Traffic Safety Council warned today. “Driving a safety checked car is certainly a prime factor in avoiding accidents”, he said, “but this shouldn’t lull the driver into false sense of driving security”. “After all”, he added, “there are some three million other cars on Hoosier streets and highways and a majority of them have not yet been safety checked”. “August is a heavy month for travel in Indiana”, Huber continued, “and it behooves every driver to take every possible precaution to avoid traffic tragedies”. He said his office firmly supports the “Bring ’Em Back Alive” program sponsored by the American Automibile Association in an attempt to reduce losses resulting from traffic accidents during the vacation period. “When all else fails”, Huber concluded, “there is always the ever-faithful seat belt. Four out •f every ten deaths and more than half the serious injuries could be avoided”, he said, “if the victims had been wearing seat belts at the moment of impact”. So, Buckle Up. Drive with Care, and improve your chances of “Bringing ’Em Back Alive”.

Allison Engine Reduces Air Pollution Reduction of air pollution is the newest application of the versatile 501 gas turbine engine built by the Allison Division of General Motors. Reuben R. Jensen, GM vice president and Allison general manager, announced today ■ that the engine will power a special generator set designed to purify the air released from a San Diego, Calif., sewage plant. “The generator set, which will be installed early, next year, will serve two functions,” Jensen said. “By burning odorous gases given off during the processing of sewage, it will neutralize the odor. And, by burning the gases as feul, it will generate power for the San Diego Gas and Electric Company network.” “In essence, the turbine will take the undesirable elements of air pollution and convert it to power for the community,” Jensen explained. The unit will be built by Allison and will be installed and operated by the San Diego Gas and Electric Company for the City of San Diego. “This generator set will represent the first time that an air-craft-type turbine has been used in the fight against air pollution,” Jensen added. Rated at 2000 KW, the Allison 501 turbine is a modification of the T56/Model 501 aircraft engine which has accumulated more than 30 million flight hours.
