ciples. “The club believes people should enjoy their cars and should not be afraid to venture out on the highway for the long week-ends,” said James W. Parks, Hoosier Motor Club executive vice-president. “Research shows that holiday week-end fatalities are scarcely more numerous than those of any week-end.” In fact, Parks pointed out, the real danger zone is within a 25mile radius of the driver’s home. It has been found that consistent-

New highways make it possible for tavelers to go farther on a week-end than ever before, in better cars on improved roads. The worker is entitled to take ad-
vantage of this favorable situation, said Parks, but in order to “Bring ’em Back Alive,” the motor club offers the following tips, under three headings: 1. Getting ready for the trip—plan your trip well in advance; safety-check your car; pack the car carefully, keeping all hard, heavy or sharp objects off the ledge above the back seat; if towing a trailer, practice driving with the vehicle. 2. As you get under way—use your safety belts; lock all car doors; stop for refresher breaks, at least once every three hours; check instruments often—especially speed and fuel supply; check your rear-view mirrors freqently to be alert to traffic front and rear at all times; use your turn indicators and tail lights to signal your intentions; maintain safe following distance—always give yourself an out. 3. Special driving situations—don’t wear tinted glasses for dusk or night driving; avoid driving after drinking; slow traffic should always keep to the right; reduce speed when visibility is poor; in case of blow-out grip the steering wheel firmly, ease up on accelerator and use brake only after speed has been reduced; dim your headlights when approaching oncoming traffic.
If you’re driving more than 55 miles an hour tonight . . . you’re driving in the darq. Your headlights can’t shine past your stopping distance, says the Hoosier Motor Club. Don’t hit whatever may be just beyond your lights. “Bring ’em Back Alive.”
