Fort Benjamin Harrison 4th of July Carnival Fort Harrison’s annual 4th of July Carnival, planned to encourage Fort military and civilian personnel and their community neighbors to spend a “safe at home” holiday, off the highways, will be held all day on the national holiday, in the picnic area opposite the U.S. Army Hospital, Shafter Avenue, at the Fort. It is open to the public. The day’s events will begin with children’s cartoons at the Post Theater, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. At noon the gates to the carnival area will open. Here, the spacious wooded grounds will be magically transformed into a brightly decorated bazaar with more than 25 food and game booths to provide day-long entertainment for the whole family. There will be prizes for everyone, big and little, some merely for participating in an event. Rides on old fire engines, jeeps or military polic cars will provid thrills for youngsters.
New gym equipment in the children’s park will keep youngsters happy when they tire of midway attractions. Tickets —a mere ten cents each —entitle purchasers to rides, games, or food at concesions. They also may net a lucky person one of the four grand prizes to be given at the close of the day. Among the booths, which last year was best patronized, will be the home-baked goodie booth, with cakes, pies, fudge, brownies and cookies provided by the NonCommissioned Officers’ Wives’ Club and the Officers’ Wives’ Club using recipes gathered the world-around by these veteran travelers.
Most items can be easily packaged for freezing. No cash transactions will be made at the carnival, according to Lieutenant Colonel Ted Walker, coordinator of events. Tickets may be purchased in blocks at the gate, or purchased in advance. Speciaists 5 Anna “Rusty” Lemons, Women’s Army Corps Detachment, Fort Harrison, has been selected to reign over the action-packed event. The Carnival is an annual fund-raising activity sponsored by the Fort Harrison Youth Activities Association.

"Bring 'Em Back Alive" Long holiday week-ends are meant to be enjoyed, not feared. We see much to commend the positive approach taken by the Hoosier Motor Club and American Automobile Association to safe travel-filled holidays. This is in contrast to predictions of holiday deaths, scaring people off the highways. The campaign is called “Bring ’em Back Alive.” Primarily, it stresses wider observance of the common sense rules of good driving.
For the upcoming July 4 weekend, “BEBA” stresses: plan well ahead, start early, take your time. While “BEBA” is primarily aimed at the motoring public, it does not pass over the concern for pedestrian safety. Pedestrians, who annually add to fatality counts, must share equally with motorists in responsibility for traffic safety. This campaign strikes us as a sensible approach to holiday highway safety on a number of counts: it encourages the individual travel that is economically healthy for the state; it takes into consideration our need for recreational outlets and our de-
sire to travel about in our free time; and it calls on all of us to be totally responsible for ourselves and others on the highway. If each of us, when driving, is a little more courteous, a little more careful, knows a little more about safe driving practices, then each driver also has a better chance to “Bring ’em Back Alive.” This year, we are looking forward to indulging our vagabond spirit over the July Fourth holiday by keeping both eyes on the road, both hands on the steering wheel, and by resolving to “Bring ’em Back Alive.” Milton Ellis Speedway Police Chief
