Social Security News Time is now running out for the group of people who were born on or before October 1, 1901 to obtain coverage under the voluntary medical insurance program. Part B of Medicare. The present enrollment period that began January 1 and will end March 31, 1969 is the final opportunity for those who were age 67 or older on October 1, 1968. After the closing date of March 31, 1969. the medical insurance coverage cannot again be available to the people in this age group because they did not sign up within the qualifying period set by the Social Security Law. Medical insurance, often called doctor bill insurance, helps to pay the fees for doctor’s and surgeon’s services and also helps pay for out-patient hospital services, therapy treatments and other medical expenses. It is a voluntary program which requires payment of a s4.o(k monthly premium by the insured. This amount is equally matched from the government’s general funds to cover the total cost. For the people who failed to enroll at age 65, there is an additional monthly charge of 10% or 20% of the initial premium, depending uupon the time elapsed since they were first eligible to enroll. July 1, 1969 will be the effective date of the insurance coverage for the late enrollees. The due date for the first pre-

mium for those who take advantage of the general enrollment period ending March 31st will also be July Ist. The premiums are deducted from the social security retirement checks if checks are being paid, otherwise premiums are billed quarterly. To assure protection against the often high cost of medical treatment, now is the time to check on older family members to make sure that they are signed up if insurance coverage is desired. Enrollment cards are now being mailed by the Social Security Administration to those known not to be enrolled or who have had their insurance coverage terminated. Application forms and Medicare information can be obtained from the nearest social security office. Q. My 20 year old daughter is attending college and I receive student benefits for her on her deceased father’s social security record. Benefits for students terminate when they reach age 22, are no longer full-time students or marry, which ever occurs first. You should notify the Social Security office when your daughter marries. Q. GIVE KIDS A BREAK AND A BRAKE, ASKS HUBER “This spring we should give kids a break and a brake so far as traffic safety is concerned,” said Albert E. Huber, Executive Director of the INDIANA TRAFFIC SAFETY COUNCIL. The break should be given children by their parents, Huber explained, by giving proper instructions for safety in traffic. Too many parents assume their children know and obey the rules and regulations. It is true that most schools do an excellent job in training students to be safe in traffic, but school will soon be out and there should be a continuity of constant safety instruction throughout the year. The brake must be given our children by our motorists, Huber added. There is no substitute for increased caution by drivers in the residential and school zones. Simple logic tells us that warmer weather and longer hours of daylight will bring more children out-of-doors. Unfortunately, experience shows us all to graphically that this increased exposure results in a proportionate rise in child pedestrian accidents, injuries and deaths. It would be wonderful if children realized the dangers of traffic and never ventured into th* street, Huber concluded, but child, ren are children and they oftentimes forget... that’s why motorists must not forget
