SCHOOL NEWS (Continued from Page 1) June 1 Baccalaureate in Auditorium June 2 School in session as usual June 2 Commencementin Gymnasium June 5 Report cards issued in elementary schools at 10:00 a.m. June 5 Eighth grade diplomas will be presented to 1:30 p.m. Baccalaureate and Commencement are scheduled for Sunday and Monday nights, June 1 and 2. Baccalaureate will be held in the auditorium with Dr. Ray Montgomery of the Speedway Christian Church as the speaker. Commencement exercises will be held in the high school gymnasium with Dr. Wallace B. Graves, President of the University of Evansville, as the speaker. Both Baccalaureate and Commencement will begin at 8:00 p.m. The year end schedule will be similar to that of recent years for all pupils in Speedway Schools. Under this schedule elementary pupils will attend school through Tuesday, June 3, will be out of school all day on Wednesday, June 4, and will return only long enough to receive their report cards at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 5. Junior high and high school students will attend classes and examination schedules through Wednesday noon, June 4, and will be dismissed at that time. Report cards will be mailed to them. Eighth grade students will return to the junior high at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, June 5, to receive their diplomas. The high school student body elected Denny Smith, President, and Bob Harbin, Vice President, of the Student Council for 1969-70. Other candidates for president were Mike Furnish and Carol Pelley, and for vice president, Bill Patterson and Ron Medvescek. Speedway High School honor roll for second six weeks of the second semester 1968-69.

Jim Eppen placed third in the high jump at the regional track meet last Saturday. This qualifies him to compete in the State Final Meet on May 24. Jim had won the high jump in sectional competition, and Ron Byram placed third in the 880 to qualify for the regional. Speedway’s golf team completed their season with a fourth place in the sectional played at Lebanon last week. Twenty-two schools were entered in that sectional. Speedway’s varsity tennis team defeated Chartrand 7-0; they lost to Southport 7-0 and to Brebeuf 7-0; and Speedway won from Lawrence Central 4-3. Reserve

tennis scores were: Southport 6, Speedway 3; Speedway 6, Brebeuf 5; Lawrence Central 4%, Spedway 1%. Speedway varsity baseball team won two Mid-State Conference games last week. They outscored Greenwood 8-2, and after eight innings, of play, they scored to defeat Danville 1-0. In reserve baseball Speedway lost to Greenwood 11-3 and to Danville 2-0. RED CROSS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS “More Red Cross Gray Ladies, Staff Aides, Blood Service Aides, Motor Service and Arts and Skills volunteers are needed during the day to help with Indianapolis Red Cross activities,” announced Mrs. William D. Wells, Chairman of Service Groups for the Indianapolis Area Red Cross Chapter. Mrs. Wells added, “An artist is needed to teach pastels and finger painting at the Juvenile Home, and instruct women interested in becoming Arts and Skills volunteers.” A class will begin March 6th, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00

p.m., each Thursday and continue to April 24th at the Red Cross Chapter House, 441 East Tenth Street. No previous training in Arts and Skills is required. Arts and Skills volunters teach handicrafts to hospitalized veterans as part of the physical theapy program at the West Tenth Street Veterans Hospital. Gray Ladies give ward parties, plan recreation, write letters and do errands for hospitalized patients at the West Tenth Street and Cold Spring Road Veterans Hospital and the U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Benjamin Harrison. They also read and visit with the servicemen to help break the monotony of hospital routine. Blood Service Aides assist doctors and registered nurses in the collection of blood for patients in the Indianapolis Veterans Hospitals and U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Harrison. Applcants for this volunteer position should be able to volunteer at least two full days a month on blood doation trips to Fort Benjamin Harrison and three penal institutions in Central Indiana.
Staff Aides type, file and assist with other office duties at the Chapter House and the West Tenth Street Veterans Hospital. Daytime Motor Service drivers are particularly needed to drive handicapped youngsters to cliics for therapy, concalescent patients at the local veterans hospitals on outings and blind ladies to hadicraft classes in Red Cross vehicles. To qualify as a Red Cross Motor Service driver, one must have a good driving record. Interested persons should call 634-1441 to volunteer for any of these Red Cross volunteer services.
