What's the Status of the Social Security Trust Funds? Joseph D. Heckle, social security district manager in Indianapolis said today that a new booklet, “What’s the Status of the Social Security Trust Funds?” is available at the Indianapolis social security district office. “The booklet”, he said, “explains how the social security retirement, survivors, disability and Medicare programs are financed, and gives a report on the income and outgo of the four Trust Funds out of which benefits are paid; the amount of cash reserves in each; and the expected operations and status of the Funds in the years ahead.” The 16-page booklet is a summary of more detailed reports on the four funds, submitted to the Congress earlier this year. The reports show that the social security program continues to be both financially and actuarially sound, Heckle said. In a foreword to the new booklet, Robert M. Ball, Commissioner of Social Security, says, “Since

the full reports are lengthy and detailed, we have prepared this summary for the information of those who want the key facts about the financing of social security without taking time to study the complete reports.” Commissioner Ball also notes that no aspect of social security has received more attention than it’s financing: “Great care has been taken, both by Congress and the Executive Branch of the Federal Government, to make sure the program is adequately financed. Congress has been scrupulous in providing in advance for full financing of all improvements in social security. “To further assure that the system remains sound, its financing is reviewed periodically by independent, non-gov-ernmental advisory groups representing employers, employees, the self-employed and the public.” Copies of “What’s the Status of the Social Security Trust Funds?” may be obtained by calling, writing or visiting the Indianapolis Social Security District Office at 2000 North Meridian. Social Security Information Do you have any questions on old age, survivors or disability insurance? if so, send them to QUESTIONS & ANSWERS, Social Security Administration, 2000 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, Indiana. Q. My cousin says she had trouble getting her social security payments started because she

couldn’t prove how old she was. I am going to retire in a couple of years and don’t want to have the same trouble she had. What will I need to show I’m 65? A. The best evidence is a birth certificate or a baptismal certificate based on records established before you were five years old. First check with the Board of Health in the State or county where you were born. If you were baptised early in life ask for a certification of the church records.
