Local Medical Technologist Promoted Medical technologists are an important part of the health team of a hospital To draw blood for testing, to analyse urine, to take sputum samples, or to make cardiograms are but a few of their many duties. To meet the everincreasing demands of medical science and patient care the School of Medicine of Indiana University at Indianapolis is expanding its medical technology program which leads to a B.S. degree. Mrs. Mary A. (Raymond) Feeley and Miss Mildred Young have been promoted to instructors. Mrs. Feeley was formerly a lecturer and will continue her other assignment as co-ordinator of the Medical Technology Program. Miss Young, employed at the I.U. Medical Center clinical laboratories since 1942 has served as a lecturer in hematology for the I.U. Medical Technology Program and since 1950 she also has been supervisor of the hematology section of the clinical laboratories. Both completed their medical technology course at the I.U. School of * Medicine. Both are members of the profession’s organizations the American and Indiana Societies of Medical Technologists. Mrs. Feeley is also a member of the medical technology section of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Graduate of Shortridge High School of Indianapolis, Mrs. Feeley earned her B.S. degree from Butler University and is presently enrolled there in graduate work. Prior to working on the staff of the I.U. Medical Center clinical laboratories since 1951 she was a staff technologist at Thorton Haymond Costin Laboratories and at St. Vincent Hospital, both of Indianapolis. Mr. and Mrs. Feeley, who reside in Speedway, have two children Mary Lisa who attends the Junior High School in Speedway and Richard David, a student at Wheeler Elementary School.
Mrs. Feeley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Knox, 402 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis. Mr. Knox, a lawyer in private practice, is a graduate of the LU. School of Law. Miss Young is a graduate of Arsenal Technical High School and also attended Butler University where she earned B.S. and M.S. degrees. Besides her faculty appointment she will continue as supervisor of the hematology section in the clinical laboratories. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Irva Young, 5331 North Illinois St., Indianapolis. Twenty-one students are presently enrolled in the program at the LU. Medical Center. The first three years of study are conducted either on the Bloomington campus or one of the five regional campuses of Indiana University.
“Graduates of the Medical Technology Program,” states Dr. Dean Lusted, director of the program and assistant professor of pathology, “can offer a wide spectrum of contributions to patient care, ranging from laboratory tests done in a doctor’s office to the most modern hospital or research laboratory. Prospective candidates should be science oriented,” he adds, “conscientious and thoroughly reliable. “Interests parallel prospective medical students such as biology, mathematics, physics, and chemistry. There is a great need for medical technologists interested in machines because the computer of this age will reduce the number of maneuvers in doing tests although machinery will always be dependent on the technologist’s performance. Among advantages of the program is nearness of jobs to the technologists’ homes for they can work in local hospitals“After graduation,” continued Dr. Lusted, “the technologist may or may not choose to limit work to one of the disciplines taught in the program of study, such as blood banking, hematology, chemistry, serology, bacteriology, histology, and clinical microscopy. “There are IS such programs in the State of Indiana that lead to an American Society of Clinical Pathologists Certification as well as a B.S. degree. The national recognition of the fine training of an ASCP medical technologist coupled with the continuing demand form a virtual passport to work in any part of the country."
AMS Spelling Program Announcement has been made by Robert L. Whitmoyer, Chairman of the Education Committee of the Administrative Management Society’s Indianapolis Chapter, that through joint sponsorship of the Chapter and the local schools, high school students will soon take part in the AMS Spelling Program. Last year over 5,00 local students participated in this program. Whitmoyer said that students desiring to participate will be provided with a list of 500 frequently misspelled words with instructions to study the entire list in preparation for a Test which win be given a week or ten days later. The Chapter and the schools are finalizing plans to get this program underway. It should be noted that the Program is entirely cost-free to both the student and to the school. The examination is to be administered and graded by teachers. Handsome AMS Spelling Proficiency Certificates will be subsequently awarded to those students passing the test. Teachers and the school officials in the community desiring additional information on the program may obtain it from Mr. Robert L. Whitmoyer, Blue Cross Blue Shield, 110 North Illinois Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46209, Telephone Number 635-9411.

SPEEDWAY UNITS) METHODIST CHURCH (Continued from Pose 1) often sneer too readily, but in terms of real religion we often seem to be inefficient, tame and quite powerless. This is not to advocate ‘blind faith’ and the abdication of reason, but things might be better today if more Christians possessed more faith that really works. Here then is the theme of the Sermon for Sunday next The Preacher will be James Grottick. Sunday 23rd February, is the first Sunday in Lent. We invite all our friends and every congregational member to be present in Worship on this important day, and then throughout the Lenten Season. Let us truly prepare ourselves for another Passiontide and another Easter. A Youth Project! The Senior High Methodist Youth Fellowship will hold a ‘Slave Sale* to raise funds for their latest project. The young people are prepared to do jobs around your house . . . like moving furniture, washing woodwork, mopping etc. The Sale will be held in the Fellowship Hall of the Church. The ‘price’ for a slave will be $1.25 an hour. Should you be unable to be present for the sale*, please call the Church between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and leave the information ad someone will be sent to do the job. Don’t forget!
