Travelers are constantly surprised at its Oriental character and its skyline of mosques, minarets and modern skyscrapers. CONSTANTINOPLE’S era of greatness started in 330 A.D. when it became the new capital of the Roman Empire. The days of glory for this ancient city ended when it was captured and sacked by the Fourth Crusade. Then the Turks captured the city and turned it into a Moslem city crowned by the beautiful Blue Mosque. The topkapi Palace gives us a glimpse of the primitive luxury in which the Sul-

Traffic Safety You’re 2% times more likely to have an accident in town but 2% times more likely to be killed in a country smashup, according to Indiana State Police accident statistics. The facts, as outlined by State Police for the first nine months of 1968, show there were 90,908 urban crashes as compared to 38,453 in rural areas. The death toll in cities, however, totaled 308 as compared to 771 in the countryside. In explanation of the more than 2-to-l fatality ratio, Acting State Police Superintendent Arthur R. Raney, Jr., pointed out that as speed increases so does accident severity. Most urban collisions, he said, occur at lower speeds and

kill fewer people. But, he added, the urban injury toll is higher. In the nine-month period there were 30,753 injured in city accidents as compared to 21,678 in rural areas. State Police accident analyists indicate the injury figures reflect a higher ratio of vehicle occupants in city driving and fewer persons per vehicle in normal rural motoring. “Mistakes make accidents,” Superintendent Raney said, “but the biggest mistake of all is made by drivers who fail to use their safety belts. Especially those whose excuse for failure to wear them is that they seldom drive outside of town!” Accident summaries in terms of human suffering cannot show the price paid but the dollar loss in property damages totaled $58,583,500.
