A SERMON OF LOVE For one of the most heartwarming experiences in the theatre, don’t miss “The Miracle Worker,” the touching play by William Gibson being produced by Speedway Student Theatre on November 22 and 23. It is a dramatization of the turning point in the life of one of the world’s great figures— Helen Keller. Peggy Chambers holds the title role of Annie Sullivan, the young, embittered, Irish woman who struggles to penetrate the mind of the blind, deaf-mute child. Helen Keller, portrayed by Mindy Waggoner, establishes communication with a world that she never even knew existed. Captain and Kate Keller, Helen’s doting parents, do not reatlize that by over-pro-tecting Helen they are doing more harm than good. They accepted Helen’s voilent temper and vicious tantrums in stride and hoped that she would grow out of them.
Mike Potter and Kathy Doak portray the anguished parents. Their son, James, who tried to tell them what they were doing wrong, is played by Eric DeWeese. Others in the cast are: Kay Lawler, Susan Najar, Bob Harbin, Doug Bryant, Gary Rouch, Jacki Smith, Nancy Sauer, Jinny Sauer, Debbie Ordel, Debbie Fieber, Rita Roush, and Karen Thomas. * Before Annie Sullivan makes her impression, the child is nothing more than a ferocious little beast. Unaware of the civilized world, she makes life miserable for everyone around her. The play is full of fights—civilized fights between Annie and her employers, and savage fights between Annie and the wild creature that only knowledge of words can tame. This is not just a play, not just a story . . . , it is a portrait, it is an emotional experience—full of the tears and laughter of an extraordinary life. It is a revelation of God ... in all his miraculous glory ... a sermon of Love. See it Friday or Saturday, November 22 or 23, in the Speedway High School Auditorium at 8:00 p.m.
