State Police Traffic Safety Campaign Indiana State Police officials issued the first “Project 41” progress report this week and comparative figures indicate the program is off to a good start. The year-long campaign by troopers to reduce the rural accident toll on Indiana’s number one killer highway, U.S. 41, began June 1. Each of the 71 troopers who patrol the road from Lake County, north, to the Evansville area, south, are equipped with the Department’s versatile speed timing device, VASCAR, to help spearhead their accident reduction efforts. At State Police headquarters in Indianapolis, Captain Gene F. Jarrett, project coordinator, issued a report comparing accident figures for June, 1967-68 which shows an 18% reduction in total accidents (84 crashes this past June as compared to 103 in June, 1967). A breakdown of the figures shows 10% fewer property damage smashups (47 against 52); a 24% reduction in personal injury crashes (35 aganst 46); a 60% decrease in fatal accidents (2 this June as compared to 5 in June, 1967); 75% fewer fatalities (2 as compared to 8 persons killed in June a year ago) and 34% fewer injured (63 versus 96 a year ago). Captain Jarrett’s report also noted that, in comparison to traffic reductions on the highway, elsewhere in the counties through which U.S. 41 passes there was an average 4% increase in all traffic accidents. Acting State Polce Superintendent Arthur R. Raney, Jr H was optimistic about the report. “These are substantial reductions,” he said, “that were made at a time when the traffic toll was on an upward swing statewide.” He went on to report that troopers engaged in the program would continue to implement their enforcement efforts with education. In addition to handling out pamphlets to motorist, dining place mats will also be distributed to restaurants along the route explaining the purpose of “Project 41.”
