Yankees 1 - 7 1 The playoffs are now underway and will be finalized on Wednesday, July 31 with the winners at each park meeting for the championship at Meadowood coke party will follow. ' Action in the Peanut Playoffs at Meadowood so far have found the Dodgers, coached by Bob McAllister, being eliminated by the Giants, coached by Joe Preda, The Astroids, coached by Curt Farley defeated Tony Harmon’s Yankees. The Sparkplugs defeated the Pirates, coached byy Jim Wagner and John Dunn.
Monday the Sparkplugs eliminated the Astroids in a real battle. These two teams played well all season and distinguished themselves in this game. The Sparkplugs meet the on Tuesday to determine tvho will represent Meadowood in the Championship game. At Leonard, in the first round action, the Pirates, coached by Dave King, were eliminated by the Wildcats of Billy Nester. In the second game Rick Rosner’s Red Sox defeated the Yankees coached by Doug Smith. The Wildcats and Red Sox met on Tuesday morning and the Wildcats emerged as the Leonard Park Champs. These boys will play in the chmpionship game on Wedday. The Basketball tourney is underway. This is a double elimination tournament. Each team must lose two games to be eliminated. The “A” tournament shapes up like this —The Green Thumbs, captained by Jerry Love, are as yet the only undefeated team and await the team that will emerge from the losers bracket. In the “B” division, the Gold Bars, captained by Kevin Fath, are the sole survivors of the first round and they, too, will play the team that comes out of the losers bracket. This tournament could possibly end on Thursday, however, should the team from the losers bracket defeat the team from the winners bracket, then a final game will be necessary. Bookworm Reading Club The 1968 Summer Recreational Reading Program at the Senior High School Library closes one week from tomorrow, August 9, 1968. Reading certificates earned this summer may be picked up at the Library desk anytime next week.

BOY SCOUT PLANNING A new year of Scouting in the West District of the Central Indiana Boy Scout Council will get under way Thursday (Aug. 1) at the annual program kickoff at 7:30 p.m. in the Speedway Methodist Church, 5065 W. 16th St. Boy Scout, Cub Scout and Explorer units will be represented as unit leaders and all adult officers get together to get their first look at the activities-packed schedule for the coming year. Entertainment will be included for a “fun evening” along with serious business. Refreshments will be served. The meeting is open to any adults interested in Scouting whether or not they are now participating.

Reynolds-Reed Miss Martha Reynolds and Richard V. Reed were married Saturday, July 27 in the Centenary Methodist Church at Terre Taute, Indiana. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. James Reynolds of Boswell, Indiana and Mr. and Mrs. William H. Reed, 1675 N. Whitcomb, Speedway. Miss Mary Ann Reynolds, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Miss Mary Reed, sister of the groom, was bridesmaid. David Elder, fraternity brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Ushers were James Raynolds, brother of the bride, and Randy Read. Following a reception at the church, the couple left for a trip to the Wisconsin Dells. They will be at home in Morristown, Indiana after August 4. Both are graduates of Indiana State University. Mr. Reed is a member of Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. Mrs. Reed will be teaching home economics in the Morristown High School and Mr. Reed will teach sth grade in the Shelby Eastern Schools.
PERSONALS Terry G. Thompson has joined Eli Lilly and Company as an associate accountant. Born in Indianapolis, Thompson was graduated from Speedway High School in 1962. He atteded Indiana University, where he was granted a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing in 1966 and a Master of Business Administration degree in 1968. Tom Haynes, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Haynes, 5316 Meadowood had the following boys, John Dwyer, East Grand Rapids. Michigan; Richard Foote, Lakewood, Ohio and John Eivens, Crown Point, Indiana as his week end guests. Tom and the other boys all seniors in high school are attending a summer chemistry program at Depauw University under a scholarship from the National Science Foundation. Thirtytwo boys and girls from throughout the country were selected to attend this program from June 18th till August 7th.

The New Generation Singers will highlight the outdoor Ice Cream Social at the Speedway Shopping Center, Frday, August 9. This event, sponsored by St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church is for the entire Indianapolis Speedway community. The singers, a group of young people from Springfield, Ohio, are as typical as any you will find in schools, churches, drive-ins, or hamburger joints. They have performed throughout the country in churches, halls, coffee houses,
Miss Adams is Bride of Steven W. Sellers Miss Lynda Faye Adams and Air Force Sgt. Steven W. Sellers, of Speedway City, were married July 18, at the Woodfin Chapel in Smyrna, Tennessee, by the Reverend I. J. Warrick. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Adams of Smyrna, Tennessee. She is a graduate of Christana High School in Christiana, Tennessee. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Sellers, 5022 W. 22nd street. He is a graduate of Speedway High School and is stationed at Sewart Air Force Base, Smyrna, Tennessee. The bride was given in marriage by her uncle, Sgt. Paul M. Bowen, recently returned from Viet Nam. For the wedding, the bride wore a full length gown of traditional whte satin with laced bodice. Matron of Honor was Mrs. Chelia Green also of Smyrna and a cousin of the bride. The bridegroom’s best man was Air Force Sgt. Les Schmidt of Minnesota, and ushers were Air Force Sgts. Sam Dudley of Bloomington, Indiana and Walter Lumpkin, of Ashburn, Georgia, also stationed at Sewart Air Force Base. ' After a wedding trip the couple will reside at 2 A Hazelwood Lane, La Vergne, Tennessee until he ends his Air Force enlistment.
ANNUAL VOLKFEST Two of the oldest German Societies, the Schwaben and the Bayern are joining forces to sponsor the annual volsfast at the German Park, 8700 South Meridian Street on Saturday, August 3 beginning at 4 p.m. Music for dancing and singing will be provided by Henry Hagemeier’s German Brass Band. There will be games and a large well facilited playground for the children too! The kitchen will feature many of the well-known German dishes prepared by our own German cooks. John Roch will be chairman of the picnic. The Schwaben Society was founded in 1868 and the Baverian Society was founded two decades later. The Voltsfast has become one of the main picnics to be held annually at the park, attracting large crowds of people looking for a good time and a pleasant evening with friends and family. Come and join in the fun - one and all!

Speedway Psi lota Xi Aid Speech Therapists To help recruit the twenty thousand speech therapists and clinicians needed to serve over eight milion speech handicapped children and adults, the Speedway chapter of Psi lota Xi sorority this year sponsored Mary White of Plainfield High School to attend the Pre-College Institute in Speech and Hearing held for the leventh year during July at Purdue University for junior high school girls in order to acquaint them with career opportunities in this field. The scholarship covers room, board, and tuition and is co-sponsored by Purdue University and Psi lota Xi. Officers of the chapter, Mrs. George Mingle and Mrs. David Truby and Past President, Mrs. C. R. Elson, attended Visitation Day July 11, during the Institute, at which time the staff presented a full program on testing procedures, lectures, and observations of the girls actually doing speech therapy. Any junior high school girl from the Westside interested in a career in this field may contact the sorority to apply for a scholarship in 1969. To qualify, she must have completed her junior year of high school and rank in the upper half of her class. Statistics show that 80% who attend the institute enter college to study in the field of speech and hearing.

HIATT MAPLE Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd E. Hiatt announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Sarah Lee, to Stephen M. Maple on Saturday, the third of August at three thirty O’clock at the Castleton Methodist Church. Miss Hiatt graduated from Lawrence Central High School. She will be a senior at Indiana Central College this fall and has served as secretary of the student government, editor of the college Theacallosian Literary Society. Mr. Maple graduated from Speedway High School, 1962, graduated from Indiana Central College in 1966. He will be a senior this fall at Indana University School of Law. He was president of Indiana Central College student government and he is listed in “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities”. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Maple of Speedway. The couple will live in the married students apartments at Indiana Central College.
The Town Board Reports By: Ray L. Oeth, Clerk-Treasurer The Board of Trustees for the Civil Town of Speedway held their Regular Meeting on Monday evening July 22, 1968 in the Town Hall auditorium. The Board approved a draft of a Sewer Service Agreement, with some changes, with Carriage House West 11. The Board ordered signs to prohibit truck traffic on Auburn Street during the improvement of Georgetown Road as requested by Mr. Maurce Hiser of 2306 North Auburn Street. Also to have a Radar Car in that area to check speeders. The Board approved the installation of a traffic signal at 22nd Street and Lyndhurst Drive. This will be installed before school starts in September. The Board instructed the Town Attorney to proceed with an Ordinance to prohibit parking on both sides of 22nd Street from Lyndhurst Drive to U.S. No. 136. It will be enforced by the Police Department when posted. The Board approved budget for 1969 for publication. Lugar, Butler Commencement Speaker Indianapolis Mayor Richard G. Lugar will deliver the principal address at Butler University’s summer commencement exercises at 5 p.m., Aug. 2, in Clowes Memorial Hall. His topic will be “Reflections on Freedom and Responsibility.” Over 200 students are candidates for degrees in liberal arts and scences, education, business administration, pharmacy, music and graduate instruction. SCHOOL NEWS Football physical examinations for varsity and reserve football players will be held on Wednesday, August 14, at 1:30 p.m. in the varsity locker room.
