POT OF GOLD FOUND IN SPEEDWAY Scheduled as the next attraction at the Speedway High School Student Theatre, opening on Friday, May 10 for two performances, is “Finian’s Rainbow,” the fanciful Broadway musical comedy hit about an Irishman and his daughter who steal away a pot of gold from the leprechauns of their country and bring it to Rainbow Valley, in the American state of Missitucky, which is an idyllic spot except for one handicap. The handicap is that Rainbow Valley and its singing citizens are afflicted with an old-fash-ioned bigoted politician not too deeply disguised under the name of Senator Billboard Rankins. The whimsical plot revolves around the magic that is wrought on the pro-segregation-spirited Senator by the pot of gold, and the geniality of the Irishman and his daughter, plus the sprightliness of a leprechaun who also arrives in pursuit of the stolen pot of gold. Debbie Medenwald is starred as the Irish lass who sings the haunting hit-parade number, “How Are Things in Glocca Morro?” and the part of her jaunty father, Finian McLonergan, will be played by Tom Burnett. Preston Sinks will be seen as the capering leprechaun, and heard also, since his assignment includes singing two of the show’s most popular songs, “Something Sort of Grandish” and that essence of fickleness, “If I Can’t Be Near the Girl I LOVE.” Scott McClelland will have the hero’s role of the Rainbow Valley farmer with whom Sharon McLonergan falls in love, and with whom she sings the exuberant and well-known songs, “Old Devil Moon” and “If This Isn’t Love.” The score of “Finian’s Rainbow,” written by E. Y. Harburg and Burton Lane, is also notable for two celebrated choral numbers, “This Time of Year” and the expression of the tenant farmers’ joy at finding that, because of the majic of the pot of gold, they can afford to buy anything they want in the world, “Great Come-and-Get-It Day.” The show was particularly praised when it began its 91 week run in New York in 1947, for the fact that it combined both gay entertainment and some sharp social commentary. One of the wonders worked by McLonergan’s pot of gold is the granting of three wishes, and one of them converts the bigoted Senator into a Negro for a while. After he has thus learned how that feels he assumes a more liberal frame of mind. Brooks Atkinson writes that “It puts the American musical stage several steps forward with its imagination and stunning virtuosity. Others in the cast will be Mike Potter, Nancy Casady, Jenny Sauer, Bob Harbin, Denny Smith, and Roger Noonan, and a large chorus of singers and dancers. Come and see “Finian’s Rainbow” at the Spedway High School Auditorium, Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11. Tickets on sale at the High School

This knowledge is free to anyone who wants to learn it. Anybody and everybody can learn, so the library is for everyone. Written in gold, above a dictionary in the Speedway library is, “Books are the keys to wisdom’s treasure.” This is very true, because books lead to knowledge, and knowledge to wisdom. I love to read myself, therefore I am in the library most of the time. I like to walk in the library and just gaze at rows and rows of wonderful, colorful, neatly lined books on the shelves. It makes one realize how large man’s knowledge really and truly is. It is nice to see a neat, clean library, with a smiling librarian sitting behind the counter when a book is checked out. I think everyone appreciates a happy librarian when they need assistance. I certinly know I do! One time when I was in third grade, I went to the city library to find a good book. When I was checking my book out, I saw a cabinet (Continued on page 3)
