Drainage Problems Lafayette, Ind. Too much spring rain may create problems for homeowners—standing water or soil erosion in the lawn flooded basements. Don Sisson, Extension agricultural engineer at Purdue University, says some problems can be solved by individual homeowners, but builders often need to take the preventative steps in proper grading and construction. Before establishing a new lawn, grade the land so that surface water drains away from the house and other buildings. This water should be forced to flow toward an outlet, such as street gutters or storm sewer inlets. If water ponding shows up in established neighborhoods, homeowners may be able to excavate trenches along lot lines to dispose of standing water. Hauling in fill dirt is practical only for very small areas.
Proper grading will help prevent water in the basement and crawl spaces, but in addition, every basement needs a properly installed footing drain. If such a drain is omitted during construction, the basement is almost certain to be wet Water from roof gutters should be outletted away from the house

foundation. Sometimes water backs into basements from overloaded storm or sanitary sewers. The best prevention for this is an improved storm sewer system, but back up valves can be installed in basement floor drains to help check this problem. Excess runoff water on steep slopes usually means soil erosion.

Homeowners should look first for a way to divert the runoff water Then they can establish grass sod or other plantings to protect the bank. On very steep banks, caving is sometimes a problem. Again, surface runoff water should be diverted. Special shrubs for erosion control will help solve this kind of problem. Consider retaining walls only as a last resort.
