The SPEEDWAY FLYEK
MY FIRST JET HIGHT by Cindy Rumple Wellow is my lucky color. That is the reason I wore it on July thirteenth, the day of my first jet flight. There really was no reason to wear yellow or to be frightened, but at 7:30 A.M. on July 13th I put on my yellow lucky charms, I also held a delicate yellow mosegay my close friends had given me. The T.W.A. Starsteream jet flight left at 7:35 AM. at Gate 11. Friends and relatives said goodbye and wished me well. As I walked slowly through the gate, anxiety took hold of me. I was worried about what would happen if the plane had engine trouble, if it would collide with another plane, if some insane passenger had a tomb—all these horrible thuoghts rushed through my mind. I was greeted by a smiling stewardess who should have put me at ease, yet she did not. I walked through to the first class section wondering if one was supposed to have a nicer death than the second class passenger. Walking down the aisle, I met the captain and asked him to” “drive safely”. He laughed as if what I said was cute but I meant that sincerely. Realizing I might as well enjoy the flight, I asked the stewardess where the best place to sit was. She suggested seats in front of the wing. I hurriedly found a seat by the window in the area she indicated.
For 15 minutes I waved to my family standing at gate 11 but they didn’t respond. As the loud piercing noise of the engines increased, I quit the nervous waving and held my yellow nosegay tightly. It was the only personal attachment I had. Whispering softly with bowed head, I said a prayer. Perhaps it was wrong to ask God not to let me die, but I did anyway. This type of prayer was said many times during my flight. Usually right before the captain came over the speaker saying “This is your Captain, the noise you just head . . .” Between prayers I looked out the window. The land below changed from checkerboard squares **to long strips of green mountains. I was fascinated by the beautiful white clouds, although I forgot their beauty as we flew through the cluods to land. The bumpy ride came to an end as the plane broke into clear skies just above Philadelphia airport. As the wheel! touched dry cement the engines were cut and the brakes applied. The “Fasten Seat Belt” sign flashed off. People rose from their seats trying to hurry to the door. I said one last prayer and left the plane with my yellow nosegay clutched in hy hand. I hoped it was God and not the lucky charms that had protected me. TRI KAPPA CANDLE BAZAAR OCTOBER 3.4.5
