CHILD PEDESTRIAN SAFETY “Child pedestrian safety is a triangle,” said Floyd A. Kline, Sr., Director of the Indiana Office of Traffic Safety, “and the three points of that triangle are (1) the child, (2) the parent, and (3) the motorist. With schools opening all over the state, everyone must be doubly alert to safeguard the lives of Indiana’s school children.” In the last three years, almost 150 Hoosier children have been killed and 5,000 injured in pedestrian accidents. More than 1,150,000 children will be going to and from public schools each day of this school year. Combined with the increased number of miles traveled, persons driving, and vehicles on the road, this could result in many more child pedestrian deaths and injuries. “The stage can be set for a pedestrian accident before the child even leaves home.” Mr. Kline pointed out that a before-school argument with parents can put the child in a bad psychological frame of mind. The child may throw caution to the winds in order to make up for lost time or just run off anger. The motorist may also be making up for lost time having tarried too long over

morning coffee, or he may have his mind on office problems instead of watching for the unexpected. Death and injury figures are highest for the five through nine age group. These children are the most spontaneous and likely to forget about their own safety. They are also the most often killed, because they are smaller in stature and are more likely to go under the wheels instead of being deflected by vehicle bumpers. “In short,” Mr. Kline said, “the child must protect himself, the parent must be certain his child knows and practices the rules of safe walking, and the motorist must be constantly on the alert for the child pedestrian.” SOCIAL SECURITY INFORMATION Do you have any questions on old age, survivors or disability insurance? in the course of their employment. This change was brought about by the 1965 Amendments to the Social Security Act,” according to Joseph D. Heckle, Indianapolis District Manager of the Social Security Administration. Congress recently provided for the inclusion of tips as earnings under social security since they are a part of the worker’s income and therefore subject to income tax. “The reporting of tips is very important since the amount of the monthly social security benefit is based on the worker’s average monthly earnings,” according to Heckle. Tips of less than S2O per month with the same employer are excluded from reporting. Unlike other wages, there is no employer tax payable on tips. The employer will report tips along with other wages he reports for the employee. The employer will also include the employee’s social security tax on tips when he files and pays his other quarterly social security taxes. “Each employee receiving cash tips of S2O or more in a month is required under the law to give his employer a written report of the amount of tips within 10 days after the month in which the tips are received,” Heckle said. “If this procedure is not followed then the employee is required to report his tips directly to Internal Revenue when he files his income tax Form 1040. In addition, he may be subject to a penalty of one-half of the amount of the tax.” Mr. Heckle emphasized it is important in building up social security insurance protection for the employee to promply report the correct amount of tips to his employer.

suggests the INDIANA TRAFFIC SAFETY COUNCIL, and make sure your passengers do likewise. Last year in Indiana 21 lives were lost in traffic over the Labor Day weekend. You can help reduce this figure this year by buckling your seat belt •vary lima you drive. Much has been written concerninf WHY you should fasten your seat belt, but the important reason is that when seat belts are used hey save lives and prevent injuries. So make it a point to fasten your seat belt before you start your angina. This soon becomes a habit and a good one and, anyway, it’s much more comfortable to have the seat belt AROUND you where it belongs than under you where it’s useless, the COUNCIL. What are your chances of being involved in an accident? According to statistics, one out of every two people alive today has been or will be involved in an accident in his lifetime, so it’s wise to be protected at all times while driving by keeping your seat bait fastened. Many people will be traveling over this holiday weekend and a few will create hazards by speeding, improper passing, failing to yield, etc., reminds the COUNCIL, but if you drive defensively, extend courtesy to other motorists, observe highway signs and speed limits AND become “seat belt conscious” your chances of a safe return will be improved considerably TRI KAPPA CANDLE BAZAAR OCTOBER 3.4.5

PLEASE MENTION YOU SAW THEIR AD IN THE FLYER Mailing Parcels Mailers will be able to send 25 pound parcels between first class post offices which are 150 miles or more apart starting July 1, Postmaster C. H. Boswell reminded patrons today. The present weight limit is 20 pounds, he said. This is the first of five increases scheduled to take effect annually until 1971, when a 40 pound, 84 inch maximum size will be authorized between all first class post offices. Size limitations are now 72 inches in combined girth and length. The next increase, on July 1, 1968, will raise the weight limit to 30 pounds. On July 1, 1969, the weight will be increased from 30 to 40 pounds; on July 1, 1970, the size will be increased to 78 inches; and on July 1, 1971, the size is scheduled to be increased to 84 inches. Postmaster C. H. Boswell also reminded mailers that parcels weighing up to 40 pounds can be mailed between first class post offices less than 150 miles apart Packages addressed to and from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th class post offices, Alaska and Hawaii are not affected by the increase in size and weight provisions of the Public Law 89-573, which became effective January 15, he said. Parcel post mailings to and from these offices remain at 70 pounds and 100 inches.
