Musical Notes
RICHARD C. GIGAX
Gen. Mgr. Wiiking Music Co. "ON PIANOS vs. PENCILS AND PROGRESS" To most children beginning lessons, I imagine that the piano must loom like some sort of a massive and mysterious monster. There it stands, solid and silent, taller than they, tempting or terrifying-depending on the child’s attitude and exposure to it. The piano teacher is faced with a different initial approach than the classroom instructor. By the time most children reach first grade they have owned .and used books, pencils, and paper. It is the classroom teacher’s job to broaden the knowledge and use of these tools in the fields of communication and understanding. The beginning child with this amount of background on piano is an exception. So, in most cases, the piano teacher’s first job is to make the formal introduction between the pupil and the instrument. The child will be shy, curious, bored, excited, negative. It depends on attitude and the way the teacher handles the situation. The piano, on the other hand, is always aloof and unresponsive at first. It must seem to say,“if you want me to play with you, make friends first!” In the beginning, the piano is master of the student. When the student becomes the master of the piano, the teacher has done all that can be done. Then, sometimes the student and the piano go on-together-into the realms of fine technique and interpretation. When this happens, the teacher assumes a new role—the greatest reward the profession has to offer: the role of counselor to an exceptional and expanding musical talent. You don’t see a lot of teachers driving fancy cars or wearing thousand dollar dresses. But who can put a price on the happy flash or understanding in a child’s eyes? Or the sweet sounds of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata drifting through a home where clumsy little fingers once stumbled reluctantly through Page One in Book One? To learn to play the piano is not easy, but always rewarding. To teach is sometimes trying, troublesome and traumatic, but the rewards are priceless. Students and Teachers all—we salute you. What your child plays on is very important, too. That’s why I’m happy to announce that I am currently offering a special group of Floor Model Pianos that regularly sell for $735 to $1,045 at the special reduced prices of $423 to $647. These prices, including Bench and Free local delivery. Come in or call in now. The phone number is 637-1326.

PSI lOTA XI (Continued from Page 1) Scherer announced the total amount spent during the year for philanthropic activities was $145,000 including $50,000 contributed to speech and hearing projects. Mrs. W. C. Van Ness, Summitville, Indiana, was elected National President at the closing session of the convention. She has served on the national council for six years. In her address to the convention, Mrs. Van Ness said, “There has never been a greater need for volunteers everywhere ... Be women of ‘purpose’.” She encouraged the members to make wise use of their time by doing philanthropic work. A very impressive memorial service for the deceased during the year was given on Saturday morning by Alpha Omega Chapter, North Vernon, Indiana. One new project was approved by the convention. It was a oneyear grant to the Riley Hospital Memorial Association for the support of the Riley Hospital Audiology and Speech Clinic, providing diagnostic, therapeutic and other assistance for children with special speech and hearing problems at the hospital. Psi lota Xi was one of the original organizations giving assistance to the Riley Hospital. Other projects proposed and approved during the business session of the convention were: Two-year support of the Hoosier Art Salon; two-year continuance of the Purdue Pre-College Institute assisting 24 girls in 1968 and 48 girls in 1969; Two-year contribution to the Psi lota Xi Symphony Endowment Fund Trust supporting the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Indianapolis Symphony and the Louisville Symphony orchestras; Book Scholarship in Speech and Hearing Department of one of the Kentucky Universities; Assistance to the Speech and Hearing Handicapped in the State of Illinois; and continuation of voluntary chapter support of the gift program for the patients in Indiana’s three state hospitals. The 1968 Convention will be held on the campus of Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, with Beta Zeta Chapter of Summitville, as the hostess.
