Professor Robert L. Kent of Indiana Central College spoke to the Junior High Science Club on “Practical Biology in a Molecular Age” at their May 17th meeting. During the year the group has heard eight speakers, has been represented at the Regional Science Fair, and the members have exchanged reports on Scientists, inventions, and recent discoveries. Here in Indianpaolis, the local chapter of Sweet Adelines will perform for The Girl’s School at 2596 No. Girls School Road. BUILDING CAMPAIGN Westview Christian Church, 5925 W. 34th St., is currently making plans and preparing for a Building Campaign, the goal being $35,000. The purpose, of which, is to add the second unit to present building. This unit will be an educational wing costing SBO,OOO. Ground breaking is scheduled for early September 1968 with building completion in March, 1969. The area of responsibility Westview is bounded roughly by 56th Street on the North, Dandy Trail on the West, 25th Street on the South and Georgetown Road on the East. There will be no other Disciples of Christ ’Church which is part of the brotherhood in this zone except Westview. * SK Jim Lavery is his sixth full season as Head Track Coach at Indiana University will be the
speaker at the Speedway High School Spring Sports Banquet sponsored by the Speedway LJons Club. The banquet will be held in the Speedway High School Cafeteria Wednesday, May 24 at 6:45 pm. A native of Calgary, Canada, Jipi attended college at Drake Uhiversity, where he established himself as one of its all-time track greats. A quartermiler, Lavery anchored three winning teams in the Drake Relays of 1952, earning him selection as the outstanding athlete on the Relays and a place in the Relays Hall of Fame. At one time eight of his performances were records on Midwest tracks. Highlight of his competitive career was the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland. Representing his native Canada, Jim got to the semifinals of the 400-meter event and then helped Canada to a fourth-place finish in the 1600-meter relay. ittr Lavery launched his coaching career at Indiana after the Olympics and continued his education at I.U. He received his Master’s Degree in Physical Education in 1954 and his Doctorate in 1957. Speedway Chapter O.E.S. No. 541 The May called meeting of the Speedway Chapter O.E.S. No. 561 will be held Tues. Eve. May 23rd. at 8:00 P.M. at the Masonic Temple. This meeting will be Deputy Night. Our Chapter has been honored by the Grand Chapter with the appointment of one of our Past Matrons as district Deputy of District Eleven. Mrs. Margaret Friedman has received that honor.

Cub Scout Pock 66 News The Pinewood Derby of Cub Scout Pack 66 was held at the Speedway Junior High School Gyymnasium May 11, 1967. Thir-ty-four Cubs entered their handmade model race cars in the Derby. The best design car award went to Ken Williams. He also received the plaque and slide. Honorable mention for best design went to Terry Thorpe. Preliminary Heat winners were. Todd Lockhart, David Smith, Nathan Huber, Larry Kay, Eric Blossom, Tim Casady, Greg Cofoid, Ricky Jones, Ken Williams, Loren Campbell, and Randy Roberts. Winners for each den’s competition were: Brad Melvin, David Smith, Larry Kay, Eric Blossom and Danny Edwards. The Den Mother’s race was won by Mrs. Claude Smith. Following the Derby the Cub Scouting awards were made: Doug Smith who has obtained the Webelos rank, the highest in Cub Scouting, was presented the Boy Scout neckerchief of Boy Scout Troop 66 by the Pack. This was presented to him by Ass’t Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop of 66 Ted Feucht Greg Cofoid was given the Scout Fair Ticket top saleman patch. This award is given by Central Indiana Council. The Pack presented him with a gold medal as a token of their appreciation for his outstanding job of salesmanship. Vocational Explorer Post The “500” Optimist Club has organized a Vocational Explorer Post. The next meeting will be held Monday, May 22nd, 7:30 pm. in the Youth building of St Andrews Lutheran Church. The topic at that time will be Forestry as presented by a professor from Indiana University. Any boy, 14 years of age or older, is invited to attend the meeting and may wish to become a charter member of this organization. The Charter will be closed when 25 boys have registered. The Post will meet twice each month and will explore vocations and occupations that are of interest to boys of high school age.
